March 17, 20188 yr Popular Post Whew. After a week of 10:30 to 11:45 nights (when we got kicked out of the school), we got the Mary Poppins set done. Behind the curtains, 12 minutes after the house doors opened. I'm beat. We had so many wall scenes, there was an issue storing them off-stage when they were not needed. Most of them were 10-14 tall, built in sections. Some were "flying walls" (hoisted up on cables and pipes), most were on wheels and pushed into place. Sections ranged from 30' to 50' wide. Cut outs for doors, windows, fireplaces, coves, steps, arched doors, etc. A 7' tall "birdcage", numerous chimneys and roof segments, beds that have stage hands inside them and come out of the walls, tables that break, china cabinets that fall, kites that fly, etc. What a job it was! The set designers decided we should make the walls out of 1x4 instead of the usual 2x4 for weight and space considerations. We had a terrible time with warping of these large panels. Most are not noticeable from the seating, but caused us headaches. We are thinking next time to try using steel studs that are lightweight, don't warp and twist, and (hopefully) we can get in long lengths. (and that's why you haven't heard much from me recently) No time to even get a few photos of the final set, hope someone does. Edited March 17, 20188 yr by kmealy

March 17, 20188 yr Popular Post Wow, some of you guys have been busy! I did manage to get the overhead portion (the ducting) of the DC completed this week, and finally will be able to start assembling my stationary tools and hooking them up. Still need to complete hanging the lights and putting some high shelves up in the shop. One thing has become very clear to me, short guys (5'7") shouldn't have tall ceilings (10')...it really makes things a lot harder to do. Thank goodness for a rolling scaffold.

March 17, 20188 yr try tall (6'5'') and low bridges... ouch... but 8' ceilings and crown is a no issue... no scaffold required...
