I rough turned one of the bowl blanks. I am terrible at identifying types of wood. I'm sure some of you will know what it is.

Great start!

I went back and looked at the pictures you posted when cutting the log. I think it might be maple, judging from the bark. But that's just a guess.

Looking good Rusty.  Did you enjoy turning the wet wood?

Pretty nice rough turn. Like Lew it looks like maple from the blank pics. Don't have much of that around here, but I got some beech this week may be able to turn some tomorrow.

Nice rough out bowl, Rusty.

Joining the chorus, here. It's maple...I think.

Looks good to me, also think it's maple.

Looks good from the West side of Indiana Rusty..

Agree with others, it appears to be Maple (probably Sugar Maple or sometimes called "Soft" Maple). I assume this was an "urban log" you acquired?

I happened upon this FFA tree identification project from West Virginia. You might download & save for future reference if you find helpful. I did.

Added that to my phone!

That should be made into a resource here on TPW somehow... great find Dave!

Yes. I could feel the moisture hit my arm as I was turning it. My arm was soaked by the time I was done.

Another good indicator in this case probably was Sugar Maple...all the Sugar Maple camps are running around here right now; trees tapped and first big pancake, fresh maple syrup festival this weekend

Making me hungry.

Herb

Mmmm, maple syrup!

Stop already. I am eating low carb and can't have pancakes and syrup. :)
