Wednesday's Wisdom For Woodturners February 14, 2018

i have a friend who makes knives.  from scratch.  he forges the steel, layers it, shapes it, heat treats it, polishes it and finishes it (including scales and sheath).  he does it for fun, but he still charges for his work.  a common price for one of his pieces is somewhere in the 500-800 range.  what's that you say, you can get a knife at walmart for $20?  then why are we talking, go to walmart!

he told a story some time ago where he had some young punk at a show saying "it's just metal, how hard can it be?"  he had an answer waiting, he turned around, grabbed some scraps of different steel alloys, and said "here's your starter kit, $30 please."  the punk walked away.

i like his style.
