    I've done that.  Works well.  I also use the HSS bits, they can be sharpened and can be shaped to however you desire.

    When I'm in birdhouse ornament mode I use a router bit to hollow the bodies of the ornament. A 3/4 or 1" bull nose. It is a little different operation but router bits work well. I've known of turners making hollowing tools from drill bits as well.
