November 11, 20178 yr Popular Post Haven't had a lot of time in the shop the past few days but I did get two more boxes done. These are also based on Liam O'neill's "crooked grain box" design. I like the grain in both of these but especially the one on the right. Both spalted beech and walnut. Four more to go for this project but I have the demo for the next meeting, figure I may as well do it on one of these. Steve
November 11, 20178 yr How long does it take you to complete one of these? Finish? Just curious... they are beautiful thanks
November 11, 20178 yr Awesome turnings! Love the spalting. Looks like the wood is pretty solid in spite of the spalting.

Just curious... they are beautiful thanks Thank you Stick, Dan, and Lew. Thank you as well Jim. I'm not very good about keeping track of time when I'm turning, I've tried to do that but then I'm conscious of it and I either get in a hurry or it starts to feel like a job. I'd guess maybe an hour or a little more with prepping and gluing and such. FWIW I do use one of the Easy hollowers on the inside. It's just easier since it's end grain. The finish on these is Myland's friction polish. I am NOT a fan of friction polish but like I said in the OP, these are for grandkids, the boxes will be lucky to survive the holidays. Lew, the spalting is nearly at the perfect stage on this wood, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good!! Steve Edited November 11, 20178 yr by Steve Krumanaker

Wouldn't even be doing these if not for a special request from my most important, most beautiful client. You know the one I mean Steve
