November 1, 20178 yr Popular Post Ok, Vacay is over, time to make a bit of sawdust....maybe. Had a few Poplar boards sitting around, taking up space in the shop.. Not quite all the same sizes...little rough around the edges, too. Bandsaw to remove some of the excess stuff.. Will need a bit more done to these, to make something like this.. Maybe square the ends, thin board for a bottom panel....maybe some dovetails to connect things.... Yes, I do pins first. Just easier for me that way. I had to use the mitre box to square the ends, first. And a #4 plane to smooth the edges. Got out a few toys.. Er..tools. Some for lay out work, some to make sawdust and chips....went to get the shop stool ready to go... Picked it up from one spot, when I set it down, the welds on the legs broke...guess I need a new stool...for now, I have to work standing up....grrr Edges were jointed, before I went too far along...I think.. 1/4mile of wood means a 1/4 mile of plane, don't need those huge planes for this. As for saw work, when I sit down to saw.. I am looking straight ahead, and can follow the lines....when I am standing up, I have to lean over a bit, to see where I am cutting....which makes the saw lean as well...good thing I always cut leaving the lines. Meh....next two sets, I kept a thumb right beside the saw plate, keeping it from any leaning. Got both ends sawn, time to chop a bit I have a 2 x 6 Maple Chopping Block. Chop 1/2 way down, flip over, chop the rest....repeat for the other end. Managed to lay out saw and chop one more set of pins.....then lay out a fourth set.....legs were cramping up...about time to call it a day. Maybe tomorrow, I can get the fourth set done, then layout all the tails, and get those done. Then some grooves made, with the Stanley 45? Stay tuned, I might even try something different for this lid....

I have 2 stools at different heights, one backed adjustable chair and one armed chair, Oh and don't forget the footstool. Sure does make work more comfortable
November 2, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Now have a stool in the shop, again... Almost the same as the last one, except THIS one isn't broke... Makes it nice when doing a bit of saw work....had to chop a few items.. Cut in about 1/2 way..then flip this over.. And chop out the waste...use this to mark out a few tails.. I merely have to run the bandsaw on the waste side of the lines, usually wind up splitting the line.. Then a chisel to clean things out for a test fit.. Then drive this one on down.. Two down, two to go..... Mainly used that Aldi's chisel throughout. 8mm, I think... All four corners done. Need to build a jig, next.. As I need to plough a groove along both the top, and the bottom of each side..Bottom panel and a panel for a "lid" Right now, this is still set up to do bead work....need to trade cutters to a groove cutter. Maybe later today? Maybe after Supper? Stay tuned....
November 3, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Well, got a little more done....had to get the #45 set up, first... #13 cutter....1/4" in from an edge, 1/4" depth. cutter is a hair wider than 1/4", but the skates like the extra room. First of the grooves....depth stop was a hair too shallow.....turned the part around, and made another groove.. Set this side to one side, and worked on the other long side.. Then repeat, and do the fourth edge...then reset the jig for the end pieces.. Was making a lot of crunchy shavings... Almost like...noodles... finally got the grooves all ploughed....dry fit for the box.. Hey the grooves all line up.....need something to go into them, now.. With the box dry fitted together, I could get the sizes I needed for the bottom panel ( top panel will be a little different) bandsaw to roughly size it, plane to joint the edges...test fit, to see if it matches the marks.. Close enough to get things started...needs a rebate cut all the way around the edges, to fit into the grooves, but..how? We have ways. Wards (Stanley) #78 rebate plane....had to adjust the jig..again... End grain with the 78 isn't too hard to do, just let the spur do it's job. I had an end panel to check for fit......Depth stop was shallow, again....better than too deep. While I was at this, I used the #4 plane, to level things out a bit.. Not too bad? 78s and edge grain do not play nice, together.....spur tends to push the plane out of the cut. What I can do, is start the rebate with a few passes, then bring out a different plane.. Stand it up, register against the wall of the rebate, and hog things down....saving the last two passes for the 78, and it's depth stop. Got the rebates done...test fits showed the panel was a bit too wide. Jointed the edges down, until a nice fit happened.. Maybe tomorrow, I can get this all glued up? Top panel will be a slider....need the box glued up first, then we have a few other tricks to use. I think that will do for one day....about...6 hours total? Stay tuned... " and feeling groovy.." wasn't there a song like that..LONG ago. ( If anyone says they remember the 60s...they are lying)

November 3, 20178 yr That's the one I remember too, fred. I was a mere babe at 26, back then. But, I remember it being really...ahem...poplar. Edited November 3, 20178 yr by Gene Howe
November 3, 20178 yr Author Roh-kay, Raggy.... Glue has been spread, clamps applied... 5 clamps? Because I ran out....need to buy a few more, sometime... Let this set a day, or so. Then the corners get cleaned up, and spiffy. Beads need to be run around the sides...and a couple saw cuts made,... . And need to cut some leftovers down to size.. To make a sliding lid for the top. Beads to hide where the slider comes out at. Panel is Poplar, looks a bit better than just plain old plywood. Not sure about a finish, just yet. Stay tuned ( King Biscuit Flour Hour, 800 on you am radio dial..CKLW)
November 4, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Roh-Kay....cleaned the corners up.. Then planed the top and bottom edges. Laid out a bead line... Need to mill two beads below this line, all the way around the box. First, I need to change a few parts out, on the Stanley 45 #13 cutter was removed, as was the short rods.....added the long rods and a #23 bead cutter.. As these has a bit more reach to them...got things all set up.. Then set the fence. And away we go... Was trying out the depth stop, to keep from going to deep on the end.. I cut the beads on the ends first, then the long sides. Once I went all the way around with a single bead, I could reset the fence to cut a second bead... Once the second bead was done, time to get out a saw.. Just to the top of the bead. Cut at a 45 degree.....on two corners. Fun part was connecting the two saw cuts.. Made a plunge cut. Sabre saw comes in rather handy for that. Hand saw to finish the cuts.. Then, I could size the lid's panel, and cut the rebates all the way around. Once the panel was able to slide in and out easy enough, I glued the "handle " on... Soooo, while watching glue dry..I figured I could clean the floor, again.. Messy floor.....but, welcome to my world.. Just a small workshop... Need to figure out what finish for the box....maybe a handle or two? Stay tuned, almost done.
November 5, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Glue has dried on the lid, lid has been "fitted" You can just saw a saw cut.....open the lid? How about a view from the side? May add some Walnut trim pieces.....box IS rather plain looking.....leave it sit too long.. Something always gets in the way... One other "PIP" to show off. Was taken about this time of year..... Back in 1954, that is. Dad, his pipe, and me.....about 17 months old....
November 5, 20178 yr I'm for the walnut trim! Nice pix of you and your Dad. Looks like the corn is just about ready for chopping or in those days "shocking".
November 8, 20178 yr Author Ok...and look what all that "clean living" has done to me.... First coat the The Infamous Witch's Brew is now applied to the box This may or may not get a second coat, before a gloss poly is added...we'll see... At least the dovetails show off....
