What's It

Our August "What's It" is live and getting ready to close, take a look and submit your educated guess at best for this months item.

Featured video of the week

Redwood Saga is an educational film from 1946 showing the cutting, loading, transportation, mill sawing and finishing operations of the Northern California's old growth Redwood forest lumber industry.

Have started on the first batch of  Christmas ornaments for this year,  WIP on these. After this batch I'll probably do a few little birhouse ornaments.

Have been turning bowls and learning to turn some taller forms through the summer. It's amazing how it takes a few attempts to get back in the groove on this small stuff.

Not much progress in the shop. Laziness set in Saturday. No cure found all day Sunday. Did get a book on inlay read.

Recovery seems likely today. Sanding is on the agenda. Faineance seems to be waning.

Great video...how times and technology have changed...

Raining here now so mowing today is out but on the radar for the week as are several other outdoor projects. A couple of volleyball matches this week. The rest of the time TBD...

Tough day and week ahead for the grand-daughters, the High School students & staff and the entire community; our oldest grand-daughter lost a fellow classmate yesterday to his two year battle with leukemia. Sam was a triplet so his passing will be especially difficult for his brother and sister. All three are gifted students and athletes. Sam put up a gallant fight these past two years including two bone marrow transplants. His quiet, reserve nature, competitiveness, tenacity, and characteristics of a model student will truly be missed by his peers, friends and family. When good, no great kids such Sam are called from this earth at 17 y/o, it does bear asking, "why him?" Please remember this family, his fellow students and the community...

Dave, that's so very sad. When the young are taken, the loss seems so much greater.

My condolences.

Sorry to hear that Dave.  Stay vigilant as his passing will be very hard on your grand-daughters and their friends.

Had a good time/day at the reunion Saturday.  Everyone loved the pens.  Kinda just laid back yesterday.

Faineance

Had to look that one up, too! Looks like a pretty good description of me!!

We had a great weekend with our Japanese daughter (former exchange student) and her family.  They are moving to Germany and this was our farewell visit.  At least until we fly to Germany to visit.  My bookshelf chair is finished and I'm building stock for a November show.

Went to Bend, OR to meet my wife's aunt and uncle (they were traveling through from Potlatch, ID). Had a good time. Not a whole lot got done in the shop this weekend, but I did manage to hang up a few clamps in their new home.

My brother ad his wife were just there a couple of weeks ago. He took pictures of some really weird looking sculptures made from old junk cars and other metals.

So, Bend was appropriately named, then?

My condolences to all, a sad loss.

Thanks for the film, @John Morris. That brings back a few memories, seeing big trees being felled, the logging and the sawmills - sort of warms my heart :)

We have driven on every east and west roads through all the redwoods. It took almost all my life time but hey those things are so fascinating. They were the logging trails and one time, thats the reasons why the sharp curves around some very big trees still standing where the road should be...

While we lived in California those 10 years we never got close to  the redwoods...

Grandpawdave your story reminded me of my dad who died of cancer when I was 15. I ask the same, why my dad at such a young age..?

Monday?   About says it all........

Not bad.  For it is finances are waning.

Thanks for the video. Did anyone watch some of the others that came up after? There was one on waste in logging that was impressive as to what old logging practices did to our forests. Our great times 20 grandchildren will  not see the trees of virgin forests again.

Dave sorry to hear of the loss of the grands friend

Just sat through a couple New Yankee Workshop videos....and a couple by Ishitani......all on Youtube...

Finalizing the routing of the DC collector line 4" to the machines in the new shop.

I will upload photo's soon of the shop to the shop forum.
