Woodworking Supplies, Tools, Machinery, Reviews Department

Featured Replies

I am installing this topic here in our Pulse Forum to get a better understanding of what folks would like to see in a "Review Department" within our own community here. This suggestion was originally created by @p_toad.

Peter had mentioned a "review feature" over on WOOD forums. I would like to delve in deeper and have anyone who was aware of the WOOD "review feature" please elaborate on it, and what improvements or other ideas for a specific review feature would we want to have here.

Also anyone who is interested in expressing their opinions on the pros and cons of a review department whether you used the WOOD feature or not. And all ideas are welcome.

My main questions are, what was this feature? How did it work, and what were the steps you took to complete a review?

Would this not be similar to "Tools, Research, Reviews and Safety"?

John

I have looked at the WOOD feature a few times over the years. Some of the info is pretty good, quite a bit missing. It sort of started with their tool reviews they do in the magazine, but since they only review so many, there are many others without a review, but listed on the Tool Review section. It was set up were WOOD would put their review in AND there was a "reader review" portion.

Here is a link to one of their tool reviews - http://www.woodmagazine.com/review/router-tables-router-accessories/router-tables-lifts/jessem-mast-r-lift-router-table-lift

You can see what it looks like from this link.

Yes, we do have a forum, but there seemed to be a "feature" that p_toad is speaking about. I am guessing a form to fill out or a layered and organized system to submit a review.

Thanks Kelly, so it it or was a laid out system, very interesting!

It is still active, but VERY hard to see and follow - the main pages have text overlaps and then there are the ads.

We can do better. Right? :)

You betcha'!

Another good example/good effort:  Home Depot and Lowes have reviews.  Important question:  "would you buy it again".  Both sites suffer from a lack of participation.

Might be hard to test a table saw under those conditions!

John the WOOD tool review was auto populated with some brands of tools. There were categories so you did not have to search long and you then were in the general of what you want to review or see a review. Ratings were done with a star system. You could also add a specific tool if the brand or tool you want to review was not there. Also for the tools that the staff had published a review on those ratings were separate as in a column for staff reviews and another for member review. The great thing was you could look up a tool you were interested in and the bad thing is that all members do not review nor use a tool the same as the staff would.

I checked and they have changed the format.http://www.woodmagazine.com/review?f[0]=field_rat_product_category%3A467

@Gerald, thanks for the in depth description of the WOOD reviews. I appreciate that. I think we can do that and better. I don't think we can pre-populate all the brands into the database, they would be populated as the reviews are entered by us. I think that is better anyway, because if we populate our database with reviews, then we can submit images and manuals as well of tools we have used for years. I could submit a review of my 15 year old Grizzly table saw, now that would be a good review, or bad, from a person who has used a Grizz TS for 15 years.

Most reviews I see, are reviews from folks who tried out their new tool or machine in the first day, the first week, or first year, but reviews for tools and machinery after in possession for 5 years or more, now that's a worthy review to read.

I envision a review department with forms, easy to fill out forms by our user, with drop down menus to choose from, for example back to the years owned, or months owned, when a user comes to the field "How long have you owned this tool?" there would then be a drop down menu the user could choose from "Zero to 30 days" "1 month - 6 months" "6 months to 1 year" etc etc. That is just a quick example, not very well thought out at this point. But I imagine forms to use for our reviewers, and once the form is completed, they click submit and the review will populate a designated sub forum for that tool or machine classification. I don't know, just blue skying here.

Sounds like the beginnings of a good plan, John.
