June 1, 20178 yr Popular Post Bright and early ( for me..) and off to a few Yard sales.....first three....Meh, turned down a $10 D handled 1/2" drill....already have one... Finally, at the fourth stop......found a tub with my kind of saying on it... Tape along the one edge said "Make offer..." Added a couple items to the tub, and paid the $6.......That pair of Visegrips, and the Carpenter's nippers were a dollar each. Got home, and cleaned and sorted a bit, found a wobble bit... 1/2" drive, 19mm for an impact gun. Socket set is one of the black, Laser etched set. 3/8" drive. There were 4 ratchets in the tub, all 3/8" drive. There was even a flashlight in there! And...it even worked! Tape measure is a Made in China, meh. I'll have to look at the Chalk box to see IF it is a Stanley. String even has the hook still on the end,,,! Not sure what I'll do with the tire iron...may keep it under the van's seat...never know Maybe Saturday, or even Friday, I might have better luck? we'll see. Stay tuned....

Kinda' gives you goose bumps when you find a tub of tool treasure troves doesn't it? I'm tuned, waiting to see what else follows you home this weekend...better get that pantry done and moved out soon so ya' got the extra room for the new family members.
June 2, 20178 yr Author Day two: 6 sales visited...nada, grrrr, decided to hit just one more sale on the way home... This is after I got it home. Max is guarding the stand... Price tag said $15.....hmmm Well the stand had a broken brace, and was missing the drawer....Offered them $10... Saw itself was HUGE. Disston & Sons No.4, 5" x 30", made for Millers Falls mitre boxes. Even had the label on the handle... Hmmm...wound up paying $12 for this rusty thing... The stock holders were MIA, a bolt on one guide as well. there was a label as well.. Langdon ACME Mitre Box...size 2-1/2 No. 75....may have paid too much for this thing? Will know more after a good clean up....whenever I get the room in the shop....will take the mitre box off the stand, make it easier to carry around....weighs a "ton"...

I don't think so...cleaned & sharpened, the saw alone would bring more than that I'd think especially with the tag... The tag on the mitre box is just plain cool...you can tell it weighs "a ton" by the robust casting...but was made to be portable yet durable... The stand is actually pretty cool and could be re-purposed for many things. All-in-all, I think you did good and know it will be taken care of and appreciated...

June 3, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Hope I now have this saw "Presentable".... Looks a tad bit better? That is 30" of 11 ppi saw. Tried to clock the bolts...one didn't want to.. Will leave the wood part alone. Afraid I'd mess up the label.. I can get the one on the spine to show up for the camera, but the one on the plate is camera shy... Almost like new? need to work on the Mitre Box a bit more, before it's photo op ......
June 4, 20178 yr Author As for the stand the mitre box came with.....left it on the porch a day too long... Grrrrr... I guess the Boss can paint this, too...
June 5, 20178 yr Author Narrowed down the age of the mitre box and saw. Saw was made after the 1928 redesign, but before WW2. Millers Falls moved from Millers Falls to Greenfield in 1931... Looking at about 1928-1930 as a build date. Well preserved, actually......better than I am. Not too bad..for just $12? Red paint has arrived....Tuesday looking like "Paint Day" for the red beds on the box. Have to wire wheel them back to bare steel, then paint them. Rest of the mitre box is about done, need the get the feet off, and derust and paint them black. If I'm not careful, I'll have it looking too good, and want to keep it......wonder IF they would go for the Stanley # 2246......
June 6, 20178 yr Wow looks like a great find Steve. I am sure you can bring it all back to life and put it to good use.
June 6, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Ok, all the paint is dry, parts back in their places....cleared the stand of plants. Set the box itself out there.. Cleaned things up enough, that when you unlock the carriage/swing arm..it takes a finger or two to swing it the other way.. Stand is dry, just well painted. Scale is cleaned up. Looks like the old owner didn't have the saw height quite right....teeth mark in the scale. Swung things back to 90 degrees... And added the saw. Had to adjust the saw stops, was still cutting into the gib. Maybe a test drive? Saw binds a bit, needs wax on the plate, and a better operator.... Then I made a pair of 45 degree cuts... Will check later, that SHOULD be a 90 degree corner. Need to look for the stock holders, or make them. This is one BIG mitresaw. It can cut over 7" wide stock. I can slide the front post out enough to even cut a 1 x 12. Will take a bit of time to get used to this beast......might just be worth the $12?

Dang Pete, you beat me to it...now I'm gonna have to overspend and offer $13 with shipping and I was going to let his wife keep the stand for her plants. Steven, ya' outdid yourself on this one...that is one fine looking (cordless) mitre saw...I think @Dadio said it earlier..."if that saw could talk, the stories it could tell..."; well if it could talk today, you would be it's hero for what you've done with it. Had you not come along with your $12, it just as easily could have been trashed...just goes to prove the adage, "one man's trash is another man's treasure." You didn't do good on this one, you did GREAT! Thanks for taking us along to see the transformation!
June 13, 20178 yr Author Did too well of a job....the Langdon is now in the shop, and the Stanley #358 has been readied for transport to The Shindig at Charles Neils' place this weekend. While moving the Stanley around, found out a screw had stripped out. Was the thumbscrew that secures the bar between the guides. Wound up tapping a new hole for a bolt. Stanley threads were stripped out. New threads and a new bolt. May keep one of the two saws for the 358.....they also work in the Langdon. Had to "stone" one side of the Millers Falls saw.....too much set on the right side.
