April 25, 20179 yr Picked this this afternoon... Hey,,for $5, might as well try... At first glance, you'd think it was a Stanley..... Not! Made in India, an Anant A4, Stanley knock-off. A-yep, this will take awhile..... Strange place to stick a label.....There IS a bolt down in that hole...the wrong one of course. As soon as I can rustle up some GOOD batteries for the camera, I'll go and open the Rehab Shop......will TRY to be done by suppertime. Will post results here...do you want a "blow by blow" account, or just the final results?
April 25, 20179 yr Author Popular Post As Paddy the Barkeep would hollar out...."Time, Gentlemen, please!" Here goes... Frog adjust clip was stuck on the bolt. Kind of grungy.... Bolts and such, all headed for the wire wheels...chipbreaker had been blued at the factory.....needed a few "taps" to get both it and the iron straight. lever cap was nickle plated....plating was coming off. By the time I got both of these cleaned up...i'll need a spot of red paint. I also worked on that nasty looking sole.. Large sander machine to flatten. Cleaned the sides as well. Lateral lever was plated...lost all of that when I cleaned and flattened things.... Rear handle got a new bolt.....front bolt will just have to do.. . Wire wheel to get rid of the worst of the crud, then a wash of Simple Green and that old paint brush to scour things clean Japanning was close to 99% intact. Mated the chipbreaker to the flattened iron, shined all the hardware up. Sharpened the iron.... Need to find that paint pen, and fill in around the logo. I did re-blue the chipbreaker Looking a little better... Rear handle is now tight, wiped down with a touch of Witch's Brew...Hmmm, shavings? Not perfect, but, no chatter. There is a big knot right about there.... Not too bad, for a $5 plane?
April 25, 20179 yr Funny thing; you really brought that around. Knowing that brand, I probably wouldn't have picked it up and given it a second look. Nicely done.
April 27, 20179 yr This one is just "plane" amazing... Like @p_toad I probably wouldn't have given it a second look even for the $5 price tag...Another rescue well executed!
May 15, 20179 yr ANANT is a brand made in India. Not that that's either good or bad, just FYI. http://www.anant-tools.com/iron_bodies_bench_planes.html
