Finally got to try a deep hollow form, not real deep, about 13". First time I've tried something like this and there is lots to learn. The laser diode I was using wasn't the best choice and it wouldn't stay in one spot. Because of that and my own inexperience this piece is just too thin in a couple areas. It won't get much sanding because there is a very real possibility of sanding through. Still, for a first effort, I've got to be happy with the results. I also know there is a lot of room for improvement, especially in the form and getting a consistent thickness. Anyway, here is my first effort and a short video of the hollowing process.

The base could be a little smaller and the funnel could also be smaller I think. I was surprised how difficult the big cove was to do and I can see there is room for improvement there as well. Wife says she loves it and I have to finish it but you know how they are. ;)

Thanks for looking

Awesome first attempt, Steve!

I agree about the funnel but the base looks about right to me.

That looks pretty spectacular to me!

I'm liking it Steve.  Nice first attempt and the boring bar did well too.  As with everything else we do, rarely is the first time the charm.

I agree with Lew the base looks good. The top a little large unless you make it much more umbrella like , for this form it is top heavy.

Question about the deep bores...

Do you do the inside or out side first?

Always turn the outside first on hollowforms. and most of the time on other turnings. I do a bell ornament and for these I will hollow first but there is no boring for these. The only reason to hollow first is so you can match the outside easier and due to delicate nature of some things that dictate the order of turning. When you do bore there are considerations of depth to remember. Some people talk about the center spur on a forstner but I usually leave extra in bottom to allow me to scrape the bottom smooth and eliminate the spur hole.
