April 14, 20179 yr Popular Post Today is Good Friday and this is Easter Weekend. Today I have been working in the shop milling some white oak for rails and stiles for some cabinet doors. I started this sometime back and it got put on hold and now they are ready for them so I'm trying to get them out. Trying to get a few things done today and some yard work tomorrow before my daughter and grandkids arrive for the weekend. Won't be a lot of shop time this weekend and that is okay. Today while I was working I got a surprise visit from some of my beautiful granddaughters. Now that makes any day in the shop special. I could use a lot of visits like this. Family will be here on Sunday and we'll have lunch after church and then spend some time hiding and hunting Easter Eggs with the younger ones. Looks like in our area the weather is good for the weekend to be able to get out. I hope you all have a special Easter Weekend and share with us what's on your agenda? We love to see and hear all about your weekend plans. Now if I can just find those eggs! Happy Easter, He is Risen!!
April 14, 20179 yr Beautiful kids, John! Finishing up a simple picture frame for my Mom's latest puzzle. Will take it to her when we visit on Easter Sunday.
April 14, 20179 yr That is a great picture of "Grandpa" and the kids!! I plan to be in the shop some over the weekend - I have that router table cabinet to paint ( I never could get SWMBO to paint it). Also, a little more clean-up will happen. I threw away the crutch about 2 hours ago - walking on my own with a walking boot on. I used the crutch for while as a cane when I first started walking this am. The heel hurts a little, probably the lag bolts in the heel bone. PT starts on Monday - 3 days a week for at least 2 weeks. After that I am not sure. My R/X for PT said 2-3 times/ week for 6 to 12 weeks Edited April 14, 20179 yr by Chips N Dust
April 14, 20179 yr Today is wife's birthday. We went downtown to a concert, a quick lunch, then home. She has a book club here tomorrow and I'll be away at an all-day joinery seminar with Glen Huey. I checked in on the 5000 young ladies in the back yard and they're doing fine.
April 14, 20179 yr Great picture of gramps and his girls. Way to go, Kelly. You'll be hot to trot when the first season opens. Happy Birthday to Mrs Keith. Working on a rifle case. Probably glue it up next week.
April 15, 20179 yr Popular Post He is risen indeed, John. Today I delivered this batch of 13 cases to a local school. While I was there, the coordinater of the project told me that they needed at least 2 more sheving units and possibly 4 more. I only thought I was halfway completed but hey, the money is good.
April 15, 20179 yr Popular Post Not planning much shop time over Easter weekend but have a couple things I plan to knock out Saturday morning. I got my peachtree dovetail jig dialed in last week so I will be cutting all the dovetails for the blanket chest in the morning. I will be a little nervous on this until I fit it all together... I have contemplated changing the spacing but will decide in the morning. I also have a router table I'm trying to finish up. I am adding this to a new table saw workstation i built a few weeks ago. I need to rout dados for the miter track and t-track that will guide fence. The cut spot for insert. If if I don't get it done it can wait til next time. Happy Easter everyone.
April 15, 20179 yr Author Those all look great @Ron Dudelston! This might be a never ending change order! @Rlbailey3 I have that dovetail jig and it works great. I think you will really enjoy it. You've really got the shop coming along. Nice work. Have a great Easter Weekend.

Don't tell anyone but the good news is that I bought a program for the this job called Cutlist and lays out the most efficient use of the plywood. Pretty cool program. Because the project was so large, I broke it down on Cutlist into four groups. I think I can make at lest two more units using the "scraps" from the other units. Good for the bottom line.
April 15, 20179 yr Ran the dados for the case bottom and raised panel yesterday. Used an un used undersized router bit for 1/8" ply. I got lucky! The raised panel fit perfectly. The bottom...another story. I use true BB almost exclusively and it fits the dado, but with an amount of persuasion I don't find comfortable. The dado width and the BB thickness could hardly be any closer to exactly the same. Some judicious sanding on the BB edges may be in order. Add another step to the process. Glad this is experimental. Think I'll name this box XB1, for Experimental Box #1. Apologies to Chuck Yeager. As an aside, I don't think I've enjoyed a process more than this one. The freedom to play, without time constraints is liberating. I'm having a lot of fun. Edited April 15, 20179 yr by Gene Howe
April 15, 20179 yr Ron, I had used Cutlist for quite a few years....then changed to a Mac. To my dismay they (Cutlist) don't support the Mac program. But it is a really good program for sheet goods layout; loved it. Edited April 15, 20179 yr by Fred W. Hargis Jr

April 15, 20179 yr Won't do much in the shop this Easter weekend. Working at stripping and refinishing a cedar chest. It is ready for finish, may get to put a couple of quick coats on.

It came with Windows Vista, and after about the third time of waiting for it to start up I gave it to one of the grandsons who was just starting college. It's my understanding that Cutlist makes a "plug-in" (whatever that is) for Sketchup, and that plug in works on the Mac platform. If I ever get fluent with Sketchup I'll try that. I think it works on the windows side Fred. I have cultist also but I drew some projects using SketchUp on the mac and couldn't get them into cultist. However, I may have been doing something wrong.
