Tuned up the saws yesterday. They got new blades, too. So, I’ve got a few to send out for sharpening. Most are Tenryu blades. Fine blades. One is a Diablo. Don't think I'll be that stupid again. They're just not up to snuff. My sharpening guy will probably chastise me.
Pulled the rough walnut for the rifle case prototype. Got some of it trued. Today, the rest gets done.
Think I’ll divide the top into three raised maple panels with a couple flat dividers. Not sure yet. The corners will get dovetail keys. Probably maple, as well.
Might have some pictures later.

Sounds like a plan.

Oh that sounds like a neat project. Can't wait to see pictures. I love Gun cases.

Ready Gene, bring it on, I love your style of rich southwest woodworking, can't wait to see the project progress.

This rough walnut is a challenge. It's taking longer than anticipated to get it workable. Cups and twists abound and, there are no straight edges. My plans call for a 42" long box. I rough cut to 46". Over that length, the thickness varies. Luckily, I only need 5/8" of thickness. The planer sled and the shop made track saw and my old body are getting a workout.

But, this stuff is gorgeous!

We shall overcome.

More later.

Stay tuned, we'll be right back after a short break for R&R and supper.

Everything is at planned thickness. Final sizing tomorrow. Then, its jig time. Gotta build a couple more.

I don't know Gene. Sounds like you are making good progress, but without pics, we wonder...     :P

For Kelly.

Four pieces of 5/8" walnut cut to size for the sides and ends. One unsullied piece of maple, which will be the raised panel and dove tail keys. The pile of stuff to the right is the hardware and toys to help with installation.

Tomorrow, we'll get some dadoing and mortising done.

I'm not slow, just careful. Besides, the early bird may get the worm but, the second mouse gets the cheese.

But it's not maple. Nor long enough. Just big enough to throw a sheet of 3/4" ply on to break down. And, I don't do that no more.

As mentioned in John's Monday morning thread, here is the dove tail on that pusher thingamajig.

The dove tail slides in the left most slot on the fence.

Here it is installed, from the operator side.

Here, we see the extension installed to handle longer stock. Pay no never mind to that slot on the end. Just a piece of oak scrap.

The results of the rabbeting in a dry fit. Not too bad.

After a bit of tinkering, the next step is dadoes for the bottom panel.

You are making some progress. Great Job!

Update: pulled out a panel raising bit that had never been used. Tried it out on some maple to get an idea of the tolerances I'll have to work with. Typical of maple, it burned pretty bad. So, I dampened the edge and it worked. No burning. Might try a mixture of Downey and water for the project panel.

Plan for today is to epoxy some open knots in the walnut. Then, run the the dados for the bottom and the raised panel. Tomorrow, should get to glue up.

You are moving on now and the pictures are coming to prove it.

Looks great!!!

Glad you posted some pictures...I can't visualize when someone uses the Latin technical terms.

You've got a great start...some sort of inlay in the center of that raised panel lid would be mighty fine too...

Inlays are being actively considered. Since this is just a prototype, I can play round with all sorts of things.

You can and should reduce your router speed to stop the burning.  Also the water will raise the grain so more sanding when done.
