Hollowing Tools

Featured Replies

I often thought the hollowing tool should have a guide that kept the cutting edge from going too deep to keep from getting catches.  This tool looks to be the answer.  Here is a video I ran across.  Skip to appx. the two and a half minute mark to just see the tool working.  Looks interesting.

Dan, That's a good idea, I think maybe Sorby has a version of this? I use to watch a guy who posted on youtube as Chas Thornhill and he had something similar on his rig. I don't believe he's done a video for awhile. Too bad because he's a good artist and turner. You can see his set up at about the 12:30 mark in this video.

My brother and I (my brother) have (has) all the parts fabricated for my captured bar system. Whenever he and I and his welder buddy can get together I'll be good to go and should be able to go about 20" deep.

I'll post some better pics  when it's all together. The really nice thing about a captured system is it pretty much eliminates stress on a turners body and makes catches very much less likely. Mine is  based on the Jamieson

design which is a proven and very popular set up.

Steve, do you plan to use the Sorby cutter for your rig?  It does look prepped very well and the welder should only have to weld.

No, there isn't really any reason for the protection of the depth ring with a captured system. Catches are all but eliminated because the tool stays right on center. I will use a high speed steel cutter for removing material and a flat scraper to clean up the cut.

The prep work my brother did on this is first rate. There are a couple reasons for this. First, he is an outstanding machinist, bragging here but I've heard others in the trade call him the best they've ever seen, more than once. He would take no shortcuts, more on that later.

Secondly, the guy who is doing the welding is a good friend of his and has the same rep as my brother except as a welder. Given the respect they have for each other, no way was my brother going to do something shoddy and let him see it. :) Worked out in my favor for sure.
