February 10, 20179 yr Nice Dab. I just can't help thinking it needs a bottom that stands out over the sides the same as the top to get the balance going.
February 10, 20179 yr Author Popular Post just cherry inside, wormy maple bottom. corner joints are triple horizontal splines (middle one is walnut with maple on both sides), and there is also a vertical spline (maple again) in each corner. it's not coming apart. you know whats really nice about building for yourself (this one will be given to a friend, once he moves into his new house) is that you can design and build however you want. i did another little box a few weeks ago, put little feet on it and the top was hinged. this top just fits into the box, no hinge. so you can experiment, challenge yourself, and make something useful and beautiful for others to enjoy. this other one was mahogany, lacewood top (with purple heart trim), maple feet and splines. so even if you only have small scraps laying around, you can make something cool that others will enjoy.

February 10, 20179 yr Author the cherry one took about 8 hours of time over the course of several days. that's as fast as i go. so if i wanted to make fast food wages of $15/hr, that would be 8x15=120. add in allowance for lumber, hardware, consumables, tool and shop wear and tear, and you are looking at about $150 or more. how many people you know would pay that for a little box? i don't know many. so if i give you a present, say thank you. and have some understanding that this is from my heart. i don't have to give you anything. i could just buy a cheap little box at Michaels, spray paint it, and call it good. as i've said before, people like the idea of handmade items, but they don't like the idea of paying for handmade items.

As you said, people like the idea of the hand made items, but few are willing to pay for the materials and labor that go into them. February 11, 20179 yr Great looking boxes. I agree it's a good way to clean up the cut offs laying around. I call them gift boxes, you rarely get paid for one.
