Squared up a blank for a rear rocker leg and backrest, and chucked it up on our Laguna 16/43 lathe. I have a home made long tool rest I made that works wonderful.

Then I noticed my son standing around, this was last night, he knows better than to stand around me. He also knows better than to say "I'm bored" the word "bored" is a bad 5 letter word in our world, but sometimes the kids slip up and say it anyway. This time, he did not say "I'm bored" but he was idle, so I put him to work.

I showed him the basics, and safety, and I told him "it's all yours buddy" and he took it! He's using an Easy Wood Tools Mid Size Rougher. A great solid tool, easy for sure!

After he roughed it out, I took over and brought it to finish. The right end is the top with a tenon for a pillow rail.

I have two of these made and they are headed for steam bending next.

Go Pats!!!!!!!!

Looks like he took to it right away! Nice Turning!!

He did Lew, I was very proud of him, and he was quietly surprised, and proud of himself, I could tell.

Great job John on getting him involved. Now, if you can just get him to wear a different sweat shirt

Ya know, he's his own kid when it comes to stuff like that, I had nothing to do with the sweatshirt, except that it was number one on his Christmas list, and we obliged. To show ya what kind of football fan I am, I was going for the Falcons, the suggested under dogs, then I saw one of the Falcons appear to disrespect our flag during the anthem, I then changed my team right on the spot.

I did not see the anthem. I turned on the game just before the coin toss

Well John, looks like he is "turning" out to be a pretty good kid and a "chip off the 'ole lathe too.":D

Shop stories get no better than this.B)

Good stuff.  Did he get the bug and want to do more?

Indeed Gramps, he is working out really well. I love this kid, he is a good young man all around. Hopefully he'll be able to draw on these experiences when he is an older man himself, as a way to relax, and deal with every day stress, the tools we all need right?

Mine are crossed, so far so good, but wait till his attention turns to the opposite sex full time! Old dad will not be as important anymore or the shop. I'll keep him honest though.

Rusty I love it, it seems to have plenty of power, and the length between the centers is advertised at 43" but by moving the head and tail just a tad past, I can get 45" in there. This lathe is very sentimental too me. A few years back our community here did something very special for a few of of our disabled veterans who were sight challenged, we outfitted two men, with complete shops, courtesy of our members efforts and our sponsors and many others who pitched in for those projects.

A few months later, another veteran of OEF and OIF saw what we were doing, and he enlisted the support of a doctor, Laguna Tools, and Easy Wood Tools, and behind my back he had them ship to my home this lathe, and an Easy Chuck, and this veteran (my friend still to this day) had some Easy Wood Turning tools laying around he shipped to me as well.

I have made it a policy to pass on anything I get through our exposure here, to our members, but, I could not pass this gift on. It was a gift from the heart, from my buddy Marine Veteran of OEF/OIF Nate Meadows, who suffers from many injuries and illness's from his time in war, and a gift from the Jackson Family of Easy Wood Tools fame, along with a thank you card for all we have done. It is with me, still in my shop as you can see. It's the only thing I have ever received in connection with The Patriot Woodworker Community that I kept, and I'll cherish it forever.

Long winded sorry, but I love the back story on this.

You know turning is addicting and you will soon have to buy him a lathe

We have a smaller Jet Lathe Gerald that I bought some years back from a buddy of mine, I need to get it set up on a stable work surface and let him have at it.

I am sure that something similar to this is in order for woodworking also...

Great way to introduce the boy to turning.  Let him do a couple pens, start to finish - something he can have and show off (I meant use) for himself and you.

Well deserved, John! Keep up the good work.
