January 12, 20179 yr Popular Post Snow and ice yesterday, 60° tomorrow. You gotta love Pennsylvania weather! As much as I have tried to get to the lathe, the turning Gods have conspired against me. But, it has been fun living vicariously thru the turners here at The Patriot Woodworker! Steve and Gerald both posted examples of natural edge bowls. They included some tips on how to keep the bark from coming loose, too. Steve's bowl- Gerald's bowl is "calabash" style with the traditional round bottom- Patriot turner, Dan, posted a sweet little turned candy bowl with lid- The turners had a great discussion about lathe organization that morphed into an informative discussion of sanding and sandpaper that morphed even further into measuring devices. If you missed it- http://thepatriotwoodworker.com/topic/18852-not-very-organized/. A couple of weeks ago, we had a topic on "spinning tops". Someone mentioned that the larger, metal tipped tops could damage the floor. Well, Mr. David Reed Smith must have been listening to your discussion because this past week he posted how to turn a "Top Playground" Mr. Smith also has instructions on making one from Corian. You can read the entire How-To at- http://davidreedsmith.com/Articles/TopPlayground/TopPlayground.html I thought this was a cool video demonstrating what can be done with the skew. A disclaimer of "Don't try this at home, kids" might be in order! This last series of videos is about a specific finish- Microcrystalline Wax. There are 5 parts and the author discusses the use, wear-ability, shine, etc. The links for parts 2-5 are linked from the first video- Safe Turning
January 12, 20179 yr I hope you can get the turning gods lined up in your favor so you can get back in front of your lathe
January 12, 20179 yr Thanks for the nod on the candy bowl. The skew video is truly amazing. Will have to make the time to watch the spin top video. Looks interesting. Thanks for the links.
January 12, 20179 yr Like Dan Said, thanks for the nod. The natural edge bowl is a perfect example of what makes forums so nice, learned a new way to finish bottoms I'll have to try. The skew video, Steve posts in woodchuckers frequently, his level of skill is pretty amazing. As much as his skew skill is impressive, his eye is too, he seldom uses calipers before sizing and then only to confirm what he's already done. He is FAST, most of his videos are real time and does in a few minutes what it would take most of us much longer to do. Haven't watched the wax video yet but definitely will. Steve
January 12, 20179 yr Author Thanks for the kind words, guys, they're really appreciated. Thanks, to for posting your fantastic projects for all of us to see and discuss!
January 12, 20179 yr Lew thanks for the posting. That skew work is great.I use Renaissance wax and love it . still watching the video.
January 14, 20179 yr I enjoy just reading, watching and following along...helps me appreciate what you "spinsters" really can do with a chunk of wood... Thanks Lew for the weekly thread...a great learning tool even for "flat-landers"
