Ron Dudelston Posted January 6, 2017 Report Posted January 6, 2017 OK folks, time to put on your thinking caps. Like most of y'all, I have several hobbies outside of woodworking. I love to build and fly kites but I'm also a "gun guy" so one of my next projects is going to be building an American flag gun case. The idea behind the case is to build a piece of eye candy that will hang on the wall built it will double as a secure hide-a-way for a few guns that can be quickly accessed. Here's my dilemma. I want the case to be secure from inquisitive children but also have quick access to the weapons so I need a system to secure the guns but also be able to quickly access them. I thought about a bio metric lock but I can't find one that it reasonably priced. John Moody and I also discussed maybe putting a pair of recessed finger latches at the top about 3 feet apart at the top. So, any ideas? There are several different styles but courtesy of the ProtectYOURshelves store on Etsy, here's a picture of one that is available. https://www.etsy.com/listing/468196428/red-white-blue-concealment-flag?ref=shop_home_feat_3 Quote

DAB Posted January 6, 2017 Report Posted January 6, 2017 my guns either sit on my hip, or stay in my safe. not a fan of this idea. you go out to a movie, someone breaks in, they have 10 min, they will find and destroy/steal those pieces of furniture they think have guns inside. now your guns are gone. get a safe made for storing guns. For the record, I also keep one IWB, right rear and I have a bio metric gun safe. Quote
lew Posted January 6, 2017 Report Posted January 6, 2017 Neat looking case! Maybe some type of concealed magnetic latch. John Moody 1 Quote
Chips N Dust Posted January 6, 2017 Report Posted January 6, 2017 That looks good Ron. I think people really would not realize what that is, just a wooden Flag on the wall. Quote

Gene Howe Posted January 6, 2017 Report Posted January 6, 2017 Like the idea of the drawer slides. On that site, a magnetic lock is shown. Just need to keep the "key" handy. Quote

John Morris Posted January 6, 2017 Report Posted January 6, 2017 Ron, my daughter shared this video with me a while back and I like many of the ideas, specially the opening idea with the head board of your bed, that is probably too big for your needs, but if you watch long enough there is a cool American Flag Case example too. oldwoodie Posted January 7, 2017 Report Posted January 7, 2017 Build the case so that it will hang on a French cleat for easy and quick access, or you could do like me: Carry one in your pocket! John Moody 1 Quote
Gerald Posted January 7, 2017 Report Posted January 7, 2017 Like Lew said a magnetic catch. There are several ways these work and someone on the old Wood site did one in a night stand for just this purpose. Best I remember there was one spot on the top or side where you use a magnetic key (magnet embeded in a wood piece) to release the drawer. TRY THIS one at Lee Valley . This video looks like the LV set. And when you watch this on Youtube look at the other video suggestions also. Ron Dudelston, John Moody and DAB 3 Quote
DAB Posted January 7, 2017 Report Posted January 7, 2017 if you want to be really sneaky....1) disguise the key as something else, 2) that key opens a compartment, which 3) leads to another different type of key that opens the secret place where you stash your cheesy poofs (or chocolate). think Mr. Bean and his car. Kelso Chris Posted January 7, 2017 Report Posted January 7, 2017 One motion to unlock it, then another to open it. Make it so that when you come up and grab it the thing is rock solid. Rig some pins so that when you slide a slat one way or another they spread apart allowing the panel to drop out of the way. I've been thinking of building a wall mounted headboard that I could hide a couple of guns behind. John Moody and Ron Dudelston 2 Quote
