Good Monday Morning Patriot Woodworkers! December 26, 2016

Featured Replies

Well good morning Patriot Woodworkers!

And a glorious morning it is! Let's start off with the big question of the new week, what's on your agenda for the week ahead and what did you get done over the weekend?

1482610874410910956682.jpgFor myself, and probably for many of you the weekend was dominated by the big event of the year, Christmas. I was able to sneak into my shop on Christmas Eve and get a little shaker stool assembled and glued up that I was working on. The next step will be weaving the seat in. The image at left and at this topic shows the stool in the dry fit stage, pre-glue up.

When I assembled the stool posts and rungs, I was surprised actually at what a little challenge it can be to get everything lined up and squared. But after I got it all together and joints glued up, and a few clamps thrown in some strategical locations, it squared itself up and it all come together nicely.

Our Adopt-a-Family Project

As you know our Adopt-a-Family project was a huge success. And a few of the raffle winners here are waiting or your tools to arrive in the mail as I type. Don't fret, they will arrive, Woodcraft, and Laguna Tools have been notified, and things will start shipping. With the Christmas excitement at those locations things get pretty hectic.

We raised together $1,159.00 for the Akin Family. A week before Christmas a check in the amount of $700.00 was mailed to the family to spend as they see fit for their holidays, and we purchased toys and clothing worth $300.00 for the kids Christmas list that was provided to us by the family. The remainder of the funds will also be sent to the family for their New Year fun.

As stated we will provide a documented break down of how the funds were used, and we'll provide some documentation for the legitimacy of this campaign so you all can feel comfortable knowing the proceeds were used for their intended cause. We will do this after the last check is processed and sent to the family.

Newsletter

For those of you who may not know, we did send out a newsletter a few days ago, you can see it here at Merry Christmas Newsletter.

I have a request to make regarding our newsletters. When we send them out, you have the option of not receiving them in the future by clicking on the bottom link to "Unsubscribe". If you wish to unsubscribe, please do not mark the reason "Spam". This kills our reputation for future emailing's. When an email is marked spam, the sender ends up on a naughty list in a world wide data base, and then future emails are flagged for content, and our reputation is soiled.

We do not send out spam. We send out newsletters very infrequently, and when we do send them out they are informational, we are not trying to send out ads that encourage you to purchase anything, no tricks to get you to click on a link that takes you to Timbucktoo, and we don't flood your inbox with worthless garbage.

So please, if you wish to unsubscribe, just mark the option "Not interested anymore". That would help us out a whole bunch.

Thank you all for being here, and we wish you all a very Happy Holidays and a Great New Year to come! Cheers!

Eye candy image of the week

Pattern-maker's double lathe. This is used for both large and small items. The bed is 18 feet long overall and is provided with two powered head-stocks and two tail-stocks. In normal use, items up to 6 feet long may be turned simultaneously on each half as independent lathes. For long work, the tail-stocks are slid to the far end of the bed and the full length used for one piece.

Like you, the shop was closed this weekend. However, today starts a new week and I'm slinging plywood.  I volunteered my labor to build 3 cabinets for our local library. All Baltic birch with adjustable shelves.

the eye candy is awesome...

Work bench still covered with computer parts although no crashes for the past 48 hours. Maybe it's fixed.

Did get to the lathe and turned a glue-up round. Think I'll make a couple of crush grind salt/pepper mills. Have an old Woodcraft gift card, maybe I can sneak in a couple of other items, too!

Nice weather day.  Went out and cleaned the gutters.  Late leaves and bad weather hindered that earlier in the month.  Messed with a few other things.  Don't have any real plans for the shop.  We'll see what happens.  I have a few ideas of what to do.

not much.  new vanity is ready to go, but it's too cold to do the needed drywall work, painting, and tile work (too cold to run water outside and clean tools), so i wait.  headed to the shop shortly to fix up some doggie damaged screens.

- No shop work during the weekend or coming week planned...

- Was recruited to "assist' in last minute shopping on Christmas Eve...that was fun (insert sarcasm here:rolleyes:)

- Yesterday AM, enjoyed the grand-kids enjoying Christmas; PM at hospital with mom...more of the same this week or transition to long-term care.

-Managed to lose my cell phone between drive home and maybe sometime after arriving home. I hope to find it in the "last" place I look...Stick has been helping me hunt for it since he is high 'er at 10k+ altitude...no luck on either of our parts.:P

- Eye candy is cool but scary especially the huge outboard face-plate/ sanding plate

- Happy to hear results for Akin family. Hope all was well for them.

way on the other side of the big, big river...

good news is just found it in the "last place to look"

Weird thing is no call or text history in/ out or no missed calls even though I know there were several; almost all made less than 10 ft away; sound was on, still 30% charge????

Rebooted...seems to work OK now except missing history...alien magnetic jamming I suspect or maybe I was abducted:ph34r:; too boring of a life for NSA...they'd fall out of chairs dozing off..

Grandkids are here until next Saturday. We have adventures planned every day. So, no shop time this week.

We are going to a local ski run wednesday. They rent tubes for the kids that don't ski. They get pulled up the mountain and free slide back down on groomed paths. Today, we went to CAL Ranch. The kids got a saucer and a toboggan. I got a pair of insulated boots, gloves and heavy socks. I'm prepared to stand at the bottom and watch. Hope their coffee pot stays full.

I have about 80 pens to turn, a few pepper mills - hoping to do about a dozen depending upon how much stock I have, And most importantly a small urn for a friends mothers ashes.

Spent most of the day either taking naps, or watching DVDs.....have the three disc set from Lord of the Rings to watch...

As for extra "eye candy"...

lathe.JPG

I saw this "small" lathe at an estate sale this past fall....the crate on the floor holds more tooling.   Just didn't have the room, nor the overhead belt drive for it....

Maybe a little cleanup in the shop this week, not sure yet. It is a short week for me at work not working on Monday and taking this Friday off. The Christmas Weekend was spent over at my dad's and sister's driving back late yesterday. This weekend, well, I am getting married on Friday so we will have to wait and see what the weekend brings, hopefully I will be able to get into the shop a little bit

Yeah, being practical we are getting hitched before the year end. In the spring we will have a ceremony where all of my family and her family can attend. It is a first marriage for both of us, but at our age, both of us feel that we do not need the pomp and circumstance of a "regular" wedding.

Well, congratulations to you both. Welcome to love, laughter and a happy everafter.
