Shaker Stool with Weaved Seat

Featured Replies

I have the parts. This is my first spindle turning project. A warm up for my shaker rockers and chairs.

Not much right now.

Legs to the right, rungs in the center, and four fails on the left.

I used some of this 10/4 cherry to get the parts from.

The parts pre turned.

Right now I'm building a small drill press jig to bore the rung holes into the legs with.

I'll check in later!

so far so good....

Looking good.  You got a good start.

A Sine Plate jig will work for all of your chairs, as the angles will probably change between styles.

With this you can set up an infinite number of compound angles.

Lew, I love that jig you have.

I could think of many projects something like that would work well for.

But, I like dedicated jigs, for one purpose only. No moving parts, and no thought needed to operate them, and I need plenty of "no thought" in my shop! Seriously though, I have learned that if I stick with dedicated jigs for one purpose, even if it's just to drill one angle, I am better off for it.

Thanks for the reminder Dave!

I really enjoy making this, this was a really fun. I'll do another then I should be ready for a full size rocker.

The only thing I am not sure about, is the shouldered tenons, they look unsightly to me, but then the originals were the same way, I guess if the Shakers didn't mind them I should not.

Even more cool would be to add a copy of this thread...might have to add a little padding...but how cool in 25-50 years when someone re-webs it.

Looking really good John.  Interesting following along. I like the idea of the thread tucked away in the weaving.

Appreciate it Stick! I love the color.

That's going to be one good looking stool. But, why stop at just one?

Sometimes I get my meds messed up and one pops out...

Don't expect these kinda ideas on any frequent basis though...even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while...:P
