Shaker Chair Bending Forms and Jigs

Featured Replies

Just a quick hit and run from the ol shop. A collection of forms and jigs for my shaker chairs.

Left, rear post bending form.

Next, front post drilling jig.

Next, back rest slat bending form.

Last at far right, side rung mortising jig.

Fun huh! All made from Ash but for the mortising jig. They should last as long as I live!

As you can see, the bends are not radical at all. Kiln dried in the steam box will work just fine.:)

You bet Lew!

I forgot one more too.

This marking gauge is built exactly the same height as my lathes live center from the bed of the lathe. I'll use it for marking out key points horizontally on the posts while they are still in the lathe.

Nice Jig!

That should work out nicely.  I really like the marking gauge.  I need to make one too.

I was always under the impression that KD wood will not steam bend and hold the shape. Could you expand on that?

Granted, these are not very thick but both the oval and round trim strips were kiln dried hard maple. No problems at all.

Add Downy to hot water and soak the wood for 6-8 hours. Keep it hot. Then steam it. 5/8X 1-1/2 X 7' of KD oak or walnut will bend very easily. You may not even need to steam it. YMMV
