Furniture makers and barn and home builders were concerned with structural integrity surely but, efficiency was also utmost. No doubt Kreg systems would have been a boon to many. As would the plethora of power tools. However, if today's methods and tech had been available, think of all the amazing work we'd have missed. Ok Gene how do you use power tools when you do not have electricity/ Water power, yes. It is amazing to look at theses water powered shops with the shaft accross the shop and belts hanging all over the place.

But, my point was that IF today's tech (electricity, for instance) had been available, the products of their ingenuity and skill would never have existed.

I think most will take the easy way out. First dovetails I cut were hand cut...ok with a saw to help. If I had a dovetail jig at the time I would never have tried by hand . Then there is that little saying "necessity is the mother of invention".
September 17, 20232 yr Author Such an interesting topic! Somehow this came up in my feed and here we are, 7 years later? It's been that long?

Glad you brought it back to life. The 18th century had some of the finest toys of any era for my eye. As other have said my interests also spread to the roaring 20's...the depression era, and up to and including WWll. After that I get less interested in lots of things although some hand picking can be done. I'm gonna have that book inbound in a few days. Edited October 2, 20232 yr by aaronc
