Walnut Night Stand...post work

Featured Replies

I suppose this should have gone over in the Turners section....but, had some wood working to do..

Snuck back down the stairs.   Hmmm, there was a lathe sitting over there, last time I saw it.....a little moving around of other stuff...

lathe found.JPG

Well, well, lookee what I found...Even found some chisels that might go with it..

lathe chisels.JPG

These were stashed under a pile of other..stuff.    I even have room to work in there...

Hmmm lathe isn't a pedal powered one?   Guess I will just have to make do.. Got the blank out of the clamps, bandsawed the excess stuff off, set it up in the vise..

Tried to find center of mess, er..mass.   Add-ons prevented the center finder from working....measure a few times....FINALLY was able to mark one end, and drive this thingy into the other end...

Meh, it does work.....took this over to the lathe..

Hand spun to see how it turns....FOUND a cord that would reach to the lathe,  did a bit of rounding work..leg set up.JPG

Trying to keep this area for the legs.....kept turning.....threw the belt tensioner off the lathe, then threw the belt.....getting a bit rough down here..

rounded column.JPG

It will have a "collar" and a tenon at the top.   Need to keep on turning....leg recess.JPG

Figures, I get these two pictures mixed up.    Gave things a good rough sanding down.  Will layout for sizes next time.    Letting the lathe cool down.   I even got the top out of the clamps...

Maybe tomorrow, I can scrub this down a bit?    Right now, there is an old-fashioned "Gulley washer going on outside.....mean the Dungeon Creek will be starting up.   Might as well kick back for the evening...

Might post parts of this over with the Wood Turners?   Think they would mind?

Nice! I like how you kept the bark in there - makes the piece have more character.

Turning is about complete.  Looks good.  Still a nice chunk of Cherry showing.

Please do!! I think it'll be perfect there. Are you going to dovetail the legs into the column?

That is the plan.  Hand saw and chisels for mine.....maybe drill a waste hole at the back...Need to cut out the legs, and do the "pins" on them first.  then the sockets...

Wondering IF I should add a steel plate as a "keeper"  like the Shakers did?

I did on the one I made years ago. I bought it off of the Internet but I know you'll make your own :)

Well, for your viewing  pleasure, a case of Plain & Fancy...

plain side.JPG

Needs a final sanding.   The "Plain" side  of this post...and..

fancy side.JPG

The "Fancy" side.    There is now a ring in the middle, the collar has been resized, as well as the tenon.  Had it about parted off, remembered to at least sand the thing.   Even got a start on the legs...

leg up.JPG

Need to shape the legs, cut a dovetail joint, and get three legs fitted.   Tenon will go into a slat that will attach to the underside of the top.  Tenon will get a saw kerf, then a wedge.   Might take awhile....

Nice, I like the shape of the feet.

You said it might be fun and it is. I'm thoroughly enjoying your posts. The next steps will be every bit as good.

I'll bet the floor is covered and Igor is nowhere around.
