Cherry Box Project: Getting groovy

Featured Replies

While going around, getting pictures of that saw vise wannabe,  could not help myself....I just HAD to do a little work on this cherry project..

Got out the Stanley#45 again.    Set it up with a #11 cutter.    Only needed the main stock, and not the sliding one.    No room.   Then added a fence.   Used a part to set the depth of cut at ~ 1/2 way through.

Something like this.  As you can see, I already tried it out....hey ....this is fun, again

curlie Qs.JPG

And we have curlie Qs!  Had to adjust the jig a bit, the top of the screw would hit the depth stop before the part would..  So much fun, I did another one!2 for 2.JPG

Hey, 2 for 2!   Had to keep checking each and every part I put into the jig...yes, there is writing on the INSIDE, yes, the top of the part goes to the outside of the jig.   Took a few tries to get things to go right, for a change

long side.JPG

Well both short sides are done, used them to double check the long sides.   Once they checked out.....almost too long for the jig.   This one needed some adjustment after the picture was taken....didn't have the part just right.  Came out ok.   Then got the fourth and final groove cut.  Left it in the jig, for now.    Used it and the short sides to mark the sizes of the panel.    Next time down to the shop, I can cut it to the final size.  then do a little P.Sellers trick, and raise the panel with a hand plane.   Stay tuned...maybe another week of this, and I can put on the finish....

can't help but admire your work...

This is getting interesting. Almost Colonial.

I don't see a lot of posts (even from hand tool only guys) where they use a 45! Well done!

Well this old man (Steven Newman) had me spend some money...

After reading 70% of all the post so far I really enjoy watching him use his 45's. So I found one or I should say part of one at a flea market for $15.00. It was missing around half of the parts. But it looked real neat. So off to E-bay I went to find parts. Wow. Parts for these are expensive. Some how I got real lucky and I found one for sale with an extra fence and I won the bid. I was lucky when i got it that the fence even fit. I thought I had a stanley but I can see thats it's different than the other one that can with the auction win. Now I need to buy more blades. Then I seen there was a third part that I was missing on my first one I bought. So back to E-bay again. I needed the part in the middle of this picture. I think I got these parts cheap. I'm really enjoying playing with the one working one I have now. Thanks to Steven Newman...

@Kevin Beitzthat is not an extra fence , they have two. Looks like one is broken . Also missing the knob but I have found it to be useless since it is just a screw and no through screw. I had to get some parts when I got mine too.

Because the one "fence" is the sliding stock.   Slides back and forth to support the other edge of the cutters.   Only the one with the wood bar is the fence.  The No.55 did have two fences, though..

The missing knob is like the front knob on a hand plane...there is a fancy bolt through the knob....Earlier ones were like a block plane knob, with threads on the inside of the knob....

When you said Looks like one is broken  I had to go back and look at the picture... I posted the wrong picture. This is the right one....

The picture above is one that I did not receive yet.
