Last year I built a center steady using ply and roller skate wheels...........worked great. However it would allow me to work on small turnings. Today I fashioned some new shower rollers into a new set of wheels for the old base. It seemed to work on a small piece of pine, however the wheels are so hard that they make a groove. I know most of the reason is the soft pine. 

 Anyone else have any ideas of an alternate and better wheel.

I used the inline skate wheels, too. They are a little big in diameter for turning small spindles, as the wheels touch before the opening "closes". I remount one of the wheels on the opposite side of the wheel support and this allows the opening to be closed up a little more. 

I thought about skate board wheels but they are pretty wide. I think Cliff made a steady rest with some softer wheels.

I do not have one however for finials Rubber Chucky makes a device for the tailstock that holds the piece .

For spindles several guys in our club use a string steady.

What if you chucked up a skate wheel and turned half or more of the rubber away.
