Just picked myself some new to me edge treatment planes and I need to gloat. All 16 planes (in not even sure of all the cutting styles yet) for $5 each. Now I have to do some research as to how to best clean these up and return them to service

They are fairly clean already so I'm thinking I'll only need to sharpen them.

They look like they are in awesome condition. I believe you got a nice haul on those.

Depending on how dirty they are I start cleaning them with Murphy's oil and soap. Rub it on, let it sit for a bit then rub it off. Repeat till you get it looking like you want it. Sometimes in order to get the names and numbers to come out I will put some Johnson's paste wax on them after they have been cleaned. I use this same method on the boxwood rulers I find.

I believe, based on the photo, that refurb work shouldnt be bad!  They really look good for condition!  I never see them this nice!  Great find!

If you watch Roy Underhill these planes when used will be almost black. The old timers 200 plus years ago used lambs wool (lanolin) and wax to lube these and that would be normal and does not affect value nor workability. So I would recommend sharpen and use.

Awesome haul John!  Those planes look to be in excellent shape and shouldn't take much to put them in service.  I am happy for you.

you have succeeded in making me jealous...

great find John...

I also along with Stick 486 am highly jealous....

Be careful, John...Stick and another nefarious character (who shall remain nameless) are known to plan and execute raids on recently acquired items...especially if they are so desirable...(if you start to suspect such activity, I have some additional space that will surely hide your planes securely)

Nice find...

Well, John that makes me feel better...at least I know I'm not the only one to stash my finds away for another day.:P

The most important thing is you know where they're at...I can't say I always do.
