Courtland Posted November 15, 2015 Author Report Posted November 15, 2015 Save? Save from where? Are you using Chrome?Cliff, I am using Firefox, thanks.
Courtland Posted November 15, 2015 Author Report Posted November 15, 2015 John,George,Courtland, Whoever, Was it working correctly until just recently? If so you probably got hacked, and it may not show up as a program. Some of the latest hacks don't show up because they get installed to the registry. The easiest way to deal with them is to go back to a restore point just before things went goofy. My brothers step son was on his computer for about 1/2 hour, and somehow got hit with 9 different virus's, malware, spyware, etc. The only way we could get rid of one of them was to go back to the last restore point. This one showed up as a program, but refused to be uninstalled. Part of it got installed to the registry, and when we tried to remove it Windows stated "Program cannot be uninstalled while running, close the program and retry". There was no way to turn off the program. Been there done that Larry, all the above. It has been an issue for a week now.

I am using Windows Defender anti virus, and a frequent scan with Malwarebytes.
Courtland Posted November 15, 2015 Author Report Posted November 15, 2015 Oops sorry Cliff, I am getting the images from all sorts of places, the Smithsonian, Gutenberg Press, the website in general, I'll google Sam Maloof and try to save an image of him off of the Google search results and no luck, it comes in with .jpe
Cliff Posted November 16, 2015 Report Posted November 16, 2015 you may have to uninstall the browser software and reinstall it. If you do be sure to preserve your bookmarks. I'd opt for something more than a windows antivirus.Maybe Kaspersky?
Courtland Posted January 8, 2016 Author Report Posted January 8, 2016 Just a heads up on this buggy issue, it has not been resolved, it still happens every time. I have completely wiped my pc clean of the browser and all its supporting files, and reloaded, and nothing has changed. I have been on bug forums for this issue, and have tried all the fixes, nothing, and it seems to be an issue that is prevalent with many but Firefox is not proactive on fixing it at all.
lew Posted January 8, 2016 Report Posted January 8, 2016 Just found something- what type of digital camera do you use? Sony or Minolta? http://www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia/term/45675/jpe-file If you have camera software installed on the PC, it might automatically associate the file extension of .jpe with the browser. If you have the CD/DVD for the camera software, you might uninstall it and see if that makes a difference. If the uninstall doesn't change anything, you can reinstall the software.
Cliff Posted January 9, 2016 Report Posted January 9, 2016 found this http://ccm.net/faq/4372-windows-restoring-jpg-jpeg-jpe-default-file-associations http://filext.com/file-extension/JPE

Thanks Lew, no camera software at all installed on our PC. That being said, we do have a Sony camera that we load images up to our image folders on our PC, but I have nothing on the PC that I could delete as far as camera software goes.

Please see my screen capture of two image files, I downloaded the image on the left with Opera, the one on the right with Firefox just now. Note the .jpe trailing.
lew Posted January 9, 2016 Report Posted January 9, 2016 I'm not sure if you tried this- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/933549 It's about the 3rd post down on the page.

Yes I tried that one Lew, I think that was one of the suggestions earlier in this topic. I am sorry for sounding so stubborn here and hitting all these road blocks with the suggestions here. Also, here is a little note, since this issue started I even reset my entire PC, wiped it clean, and started fresh (for other reasons) and the bug still persists. I think what I may do is just accept the fact I cannot download images off the net with firefox anymore. And use Opera or Chrome, of which I have been using more and more of lately anyway. But I need to use Firefox as it accommodates the Zotero plugin for reference material and citations in wikis. So that is a bummer that I need to switch back and forth for that. But oh well. Asi es la vida!
lew Posted January 9, 2016 Report Posted January 9, 2016 I see Zetero has an extension for chrome but apparently you need to link it to the stand alone version of Zetero
Courtland Posted January 9, 2016 Author Report Posted January 9, 2016 13 minutes ago, lew said: I see Zetero has an extension for chrome but apparently you need to link it to the stand alone version of Zetero I did not know that Lew, that would not be an issue at all, since I use the stand alone all the time. My references and citations are always loaded into the sand alone then synced with Zotero online so using the stand alone with Chrome would be fine, I'll have to look into that, thanks.
Cliff Posted January 14, 2016 Report Posted January 14, 2016 Have you uninstalled the browser, scrubbed the registry entries and started over?
John Morris Posted May 19, 2016 Report Posted May 19, 2016 I finally fixed it!!!!!!!!!! No more .jpe! Here is the link to the fix, it was in the windows registry, scroll down towards the end of this page at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1106756 It came down to changing the .jpe in the windows registry to .jpg.
lew Posted May 19, 2016 Report Posted May 19, 2016 Glad that got fixed. I wonder what made your installation different than mine?
John Morris Posted May 19, 2016 Report Posted May 19, 2016 I don't know Lew, this has been perplexing me for months. thanks for all the suggestions!
