March 19, 201511 yr Popular Post Finished the chess board, finally! I ended up milling the walnut and maple to about 3/32" thick and using a 3/4" plywood substrate. The border is made from some old cherry I had in the wood shed. The customer didn't want to spend too much money so I opted for not end matching the small filler inlay between the squares and the border. That particular border $18.99 for two 36" pieces. If I had end matched the pieces, I would have needed , at least, 4 inlay pieces. Finished with rattle can lacquer.
March 19, 201511 yr Author Very nice. Did you put the laminate on both sides? No. I wanted to try the very thin squares on a thick substrate. Left it set for several days before moving on. It stayed dead flat. I did seal the top and bottom. I see I had a typo in the post. I milled the maple and walnut to 3/32"- NOT 3/16".
March 19, 201511 yr Good deal. That's good to know it stayed flat. I got a couple I need to get made.
March 20, 201511 yr Author Thanks everyone for the very kind words and comments. They are truly appreciated!
March 20, 201511 yr Author I'll bet your customer was thrilled. The customer picked it up last night and paid me. Because he was a friend, I only asked for materials but he gave me some more. He called this morning and asked if he could drop by. I thought maybe he wasn't happy, or the thing decided to warp after it got out of my sight. Turns out he felt he short changed me and gave me even more money!! He said he ordered his chess pieces. I'll post a pix when I see it in action.

April 11, 201511 yr Lew Customers like that are few and far between. But it states someone that appreciates the work and effort that goes into a piece. Great job.
