October 22, 201411 yr comment_55674 I have a Jet mini with most of the accessories. I had never used the screw pictured until yesterday. I glued some scrap together and made a bowl. When I used the screw, it didn't screw on straight and true with the wood, even though I had a drill press hole that was square to the surface. How far do you screw it in, all the way to the collar? How do you do it? Report
October 22, 201411 yr comment_55676 Ron I'll lave this for more proficient turners as I am new to it. The photos I have seen have the wood turned into the collar. And from what I have seen, they mount the screw into the chuck, then lock the lathe and turn the wood blank onto the screw. Sorry wished I could be of more help with this one. Wayne Report
October 22, 201411 yr comment_55677 When I use mine, I thread it in until the workpiece reaches the "end" of the threads. Then set it in the chuck so the workpiece is against the chuck jaws. Report
October 22, 201411 yr comment_55678 Clamped tightly in the chuck, it screws into the wood far enough to hold the work firmly. The work is bound up tight on the scree and against the chuck Report

October 23, 201411 yr Author comment_55691 I drilled a pilot hole on the drill press, so it should have been true, I will try again tomorrow. Report
October 23, 201411 yr comment_55693 I drilled a pilot hole on the drill press, so it should have been true, I will try again tomorrow. I just use my hand drill. Before I drill a piece, I cut it round in the band saw (when making a bowl). I use the "circle center" as the drill location. Report
October 23, 201411 yr comment_55697 Ron, Here's a link with some pictures showing the screw http://www.instructables.com/id/Handprints-with-a-turned-wood-frame/step2/Mount-the-workpiece-to-your-lathe/ Report
October 24, 201411 yr comment_55727 What did i do wrong to cause it to screw in off true ? You were naughty and failed to drill that pilot hole that lew mentioned so the gods of the lathe all ganged up against you and dammed you to dwell in the land of off-centered-ness. Which is a place that some turners love to go to, but only, as a general rule, after they have mastered a slew of skills that allow them to navigate the dangerous lands of the land of off-centered-ness.
