    Homework

    Haven't been doing much in the shop lately. But, we got a lot done to make our home a bit more comfortable... on the outside, anyway. Inside continues to be a WIP. Right after we moved in we tore out all the carpeting in one hallway and great room and had laminate teak like put down. On the 5th of this month, we get new flooring in the living room and dining room. Below are pictures of what we've been doing lately. First picture is the back steps with the railing built by our son. Next is the new front steps and landing with the railing by our son. The next pic is the gate the same son reworked and installed the automatic opener. Lotta work in that two day job! A bunch of. Cutting and welding ivolved.That was after we poured the concrete. Next are four flower boxes Phyl and I built as anchors for the patio pull down sun shades on the patio. One is hiding. I think.....hope...we're about done with improvements. Today is the first day in three weeks or more, that I've been released to devote some quality time to shop work.

    Steps ==dirty build

    Had a request from the church manager back in early November to build a set of steps to the stage. Note there is a set build in on both sides and a portable set on one side for the pastor. Turns out the worship leader (used to be music director ) wanted a set on his side of the sanctuary also. I basically copied the design from the existing. They used a treated stringer and now I wish I had not taken the easy route but that is what we have. The existing used brads for construction and I used screws and pocket screws. I did a glueup for the sides to attach to stringer via screws from inside. Yes this is the part I later had second thoughts about , attaching dry lumber to wet PT wood. Already a crack on one side but it is small. Did not have any larger dimensional lumber so U cut up a step scrap for the back stretcher. Here you also see the screws attaching the riser to the step center. Pocket screws did all the other connections to steps and riser. Front view with extra touch. That strip of walnut was inserted instead of oak to bring the riser up to height. Stair treads were also rounded on the ends. the completed unit And the stain applied. Was fortunate to find straight grain red oak. Got the wood at Lowes and after purchase looked at Marketplace on FB. Sooo much red oak and a lot cheaper than I paid, Oh well that is life. Will probably use Polyurethane as the hard coat next week.
  3. I received a call from a lady from our church. Her husband recently return home, after spending 2 weeks in rehab, because he experienced a stoke. She asked me if I could help be making it easier for her husband to enter and exit their garage walk through door. Her husband is currently getting around by the aid of a walker. After reviewing her home and having a discussion with them, we decided to have two landings made using ADA guidelines. In 3 days, I was able to design, fab, and install the new landing-steps. Both customers were pleased. I forgot to take pics of the installation. Pics were taken by the customer. I told them the charge was for the material only. They gave me a generous $ gift. Danl

    I do wonder why you don't see

    The white paper was patterns for each piece of wood.. the biggest surprise I got was running out of patterns and trying to get a printer at a library in Colo. to print out the exact size pattern I made at home. This I do believe is impossible and I had to wait till we got back home for just one pattern which got lost somewhere in the traveling. I glued up all the wood blanks at home and didn't glue the patterns on each piece of wood until a few minutes before I was to saw on that piece of wood..The pieces were cut out sitting besides the motor home on the grass... If a pattern is glued on to a piece of wood a few days before one cuts it out with the saw then the pattern will be all wrinkled and it will change shape something terrible.. All the pieces for 4 boxes were scroll sawed out while sitting at a RV park in Colo one summer in about 2006. I had just built a band saw box and it came out with wide gaps here and there...so I says why not use the scroll saw and get tighter tolerances??? I think I finally realized why guys don't do the scroll saw thing for it takes many Vise Grip clamps to preform this endeavor. Plus it takes a while longer to build one of these. The little dowels there I put 4 dowels in each side of each board for alignment while the glue is setting up...This does take a few extra hours to get all the holes drilled. Plus all the drawer pieces gets 4 dowels in each side of each piece of wood also... Just had time to go through my pictures for a few old thoughts.

    Back Door Steps

    Had a board on my back steps that cracked all down the length. Pulled the assembly out and wondered what was I thinking when I built these back in 1994? Oh I forgot my ex was one that I had 1 day to get something done so as to not have the place a construction site. Fast forward to here and now. This mess is not working for me. I already found 4 boards cracked of 8 so that much was getting done anyway. In looking at it I remembered that the rise and fall on the last step was 8 1/2 inches. That needed to be corrected. So A new assembly from scratch was put together and this time I made the fall more reasonable and even. You can feel the difference when you go up and down. With that done something I failed to to last time but have made a habit since 2010, paint the underside. No you don't have to but it sure cuts down on bugs and when I pull it out I can clean it with ease and see it is clean. Verses seeing greying pressure treated lumber. Started last Saturday. This was old, no change on dimensions just replace with better built structure. Found a board missing just below threshold. Seems original builder never bothered. Primed it all. Starting to look better. Steps all put together and tested fitted. Got the threshold painted to match rest of house. Painted the underside And finally did the treads as well. Still have some touch up but this can be put in tomorrow. Next will be the doors. Have some more diamond plate I will put at bottom to keep the cats from scratching the paint off. Been here since 1993, only painted the doors once, about due.

    New Honey-do item = $$$$

    Roh-Kray, Raggy....this is the existing front porch. . one too high step, even with the added lumber....no handrails...Boss HATES this porch, needs help to use the steps....so.. tape measure, pen and a sheet of paper...trying to measure things while fighting a stiff breeze...Came back inside, and drew up a PLAN That I could take down to Lowes this morning, and do a materials list, and refine the plan a bit... .Decking will go across the concrete slab, a rim joist will be tapconned to the edges of the slab...the rest will go onto 4 x 4 posts as needed...I even get to cut my own stair stringers...that aught to be fun to watch I will cover the sidewalk and that POS step... With the NEW stairs covering this cracked section. Front corner of the house has a bump out window, so where the bump-out starts... Is where the front of the new deck/porch ends...railings go right to that corner 2 x 6 top rail. No digging for the posts, as they will sit on concrete pavers, 1' x 1' squares. Railing all around the non-house sides, with hand rails for the steps. Lumber and hardware arrive the Monday after Easter...went can you people show up to help out? Even with the Mil. Discount...tain't cheap.... project is less that the 10 x 10 minimum that means I do NOT need to get a permit for this job. Should I be blogging this project, or just surprise everyone when I get it done?
  7. This last summer there was a discusion on another forum of making diamond wheels for the WorkSharp. Bill @Schnewj did a lot of research and cost analysis on making diamond wheels for the WorkSharp Sharpening System. From that discussion I was able to get the sources for the materials thru Bills research. So I set out to make a set of diamond wheels. The idea behind all this was to make some MDF wheels and buy some magnetic sign material 6"discs with PSA backing. Then drill a hole in the discs and peel the cover off and stick them o the MDF wheels. He also found a source in Los Angeles that sold lapidary steel diamond discs for the lapidary trade that were 6" in diameter. So you see where this is going. I will show you how I made the wooden discs and mounted the mag disc them the diamond disc. Herb
  8. Yep, it does have some wood in it, too. Honey-do List included two add-ons for the porches. Got the needed supplies, some Tapcons, a drill bit FOR the Tapcons, and a plank of treated 2x10. Finally found a chuck key for the drill my Grandson brought back ( without the key or the bit holder) and found a spare tip holder. Had to do a bit of dirt work, first. Had to sink the blocks a bit into the dirt. Did I say...I HATE DIRT WORK? Any way, test fit showed i needed some more dirt on the left end. Pulled things back out, added some dirt, then had a few rocks to move out of the way. One was a "Field Goal" type of move. Once things looked better, a few tapcons were added. Step will have to settle a bit into the dirt, but a few weeks of use will do that. The "old step"? There wasn't any. This was a big first step.... Packed up the toys, er, tools for the trip around to the front porch, saw something i haven't seen in a LONG time Is THAT .....GREEN GRASS? I heard tales about it,..... Front step was a bit high between the middle step and the landing area. Board was a bit warpped but, a few Tapcons flattened it out. There is a gap back there for dirt and such to go. Yeah, yeah, should have bought a 2x12.... Had a bit of trouble with the drill bit, it wanted to go up into the chuck, instead of drilling concrete. Drill was my Dad's Craftsman 3/8" drill. I don't think my cordless ones would have done this job. Well, first outdoor project is done, i wonder how many more she will have me do....
