  1. So I finally started on my brothers birthday gift. I decided to try a different approach before going in to hollow out the piece. I decided to shape it sand it down to about 400 grit which still looks quite okay. Then I went and put the first coat of stain on it. I'm wondering if that's going to be the better route to go with these little pepper mill bodies. Either way its 90 degrees outside right now so I had to stop for the day.
  2. So I figured since its been warm Id work on my step fathers birthday gift while he was over in the hospital. Covid restrictions you can't really go and visit oh well. I was hoping to have this done by the time he got out of the hospital but it may not be done in time. I started making this pepper mill a while back. I didn't like the shape of the top that I was turning with the ash wood. So I improvised and used a maple top that I was just going to discard and made it work for the body. I'm quite impressed with how well the two different wood types match up with each other quite nicely I think. First coat of stain is on I still have to sand and stain the bottom top and bottom of the top piece. Either way hopefully I will have this finished up in a day or two. Also I added in some decorations on the body, I wouldn't really call that beading. But they look decent I think at least.
  3. I started this a while back this one is just about finished and getting ready to be put together. I've been putting the coats of lacquer on and there is a huge difference with the sanding sealer staining and then finally coats of lacquer. It has a more sharp looking shine to the wood. Either way this project is a birthday gift for next month so I hope this final product turns out decently. (Yes FYI I'm also considering buying a beading tool).

    Poplar Pepper Mill

Poplar mill is dang near done. A lot of sanding to do on it yet. I tried something a bit different this time I made a deep cut on the bottom of the mill right abouts to where the rod would stop at the bottom of the mill body. I proceeded with the tenon cutting tool and etched in some grip lines into the wood. I made them deep enough so that I'm hoping when I go to sand it down that it wont sand so far down that the cuts dispensary. More or less for grip and some minor decoration. Still got to figure out how I'm going to finish off the top piece. I guess I'll have to swap out the jaws for the 25 mm jaws. A good Friday at least. Small note on this one I used NO EWT carbides what so ever. I only used my HSS gouges.
  5. Its not quite finished but nearly. Adding on the stain at the moment. I managed to turn a chunk of 4x4 down into something extremely nice. Fits the 12 inch length from the Wood River pepper mill kits perfectly. I managed to get lucky with that. On the underside where the working mechanism is I'm planning on leaving it just a bit rough just to get the sense of the 4x4 it used to be. How ever I will say this cheap wood cleans up quite nicely. I don't think I need to show a picture of what a 4x4 bought from home depot looks like... But it went from square or rather semi square 4x4 to... And finally to this with the first coating of stain on the exterior.

    Bhilwara Pepper Mill

I got a nice order from cook woods this morning late. I decided to start working on them and turning one down at least from square to round. I'm thinking with this one just going with a round basic round dowel shape for the mill body itself. Just a little bit more simpler to do and maintain. With the cook woods order both were 3x3 the bhilwara is a 3x3x12 I am able to get 2 blanks out of that for the 6 inches and I also picked up a pieces of African Mahogany 3x3x24. I should be able to get at least 4 out of that spindle. I can't really do too much as far as sanding at the moment I did order up a pair of 1 inch jaws for my chuck to be able to do more projects like this. I also wound up ordering the jam chucks that are sold by wood craft as well. But those wont get here until some time next week so it's hurry up and wait. At least I've got enough of a good start on this one I'm hoping that that will be enough room with that part in the middle I think I'm going to need to eventually invest in a narrower parting tool.
  7. We have had a fantastic week here in the Turner's Forum! Questions, comments, tips, projects, the whole picnic lunch! Please remember we are just a few days away from wrapping up our annual fundraiser. We still need $64.99 to meet our goal. If you haven't made your donation, you are missing a chance at some awesome prizes! Our Patriot Turners- @Gerald is making progress on the Live Oak platter he started back in June. See his addition to the original post to learn how he handle a warping problem. @Ron Altier created a spectacular ornament from some glued-up scraps. It is amazing how shapes can appear in lathe turnings. @AndrewB must sleep in his shop! He has been working on a couple of projects this week and you can really see how he is improving his techniques and expanding his horizons! First is his small walnut bowl- Then he received a larger piece of purpleheart and created this beauty- Both of these posts generated a tremendous amount of discussion on techniques, tool use, and general design! After last week's "Wednesday's..." @Gerald posted a comment about some Easy Wood Tools for sale. I'm reposting it here for everyone. Looks like a good deal on some great tools! What’s Coming Up- Highland Woodworking is offering woodworking live online opportunities. Here is a video as a sample- and the link for more information about their offerings- https://www.highlandwoodworking.com/onlinewoodworkingclasses.html?utm_source=ActiveCampaign&utm_medium=email&utm_content=Sign+Up+for+Highland+Woodworking+LIVE+Online+Classes!&utm_campaign=HW+live+online+classroom+-+third+send For The Newbies- As @AndrewB was working on his purple heart bowl, @Gunny came across a video from Easy Wood Tools and Tracey Malady turning a small bowl. It's worth a watch- Expand Your Horizons- Usually the emails from Cooks Woods are about their lumber for sales. This week a different content caught my eye. Included was a link to making a Pepper Grinder. The process does require a few precise forstner but they make wonderful gifts. What I found interesting about this particular presentation was the outside was done first and then the holes were drilled. A day or so later I found another video on pepper mills but with a completely different shape- New Turning Items- Ruth Niles has a new product available. This spindle buffing kit is a more economical alternative to the Beall Buffing System. https://nilesbottlestoppers.com/product/spindle-buffing-kit/ Although not new, the Easy Wood Tools mini hollowers are perfect for making those small Christmas ornaments - Through one of my social media accounts, I see that StarBond Adhesives has a new medium thick dark brown CA You can check it out here- https://bit.ly/32GgTrA Everything Else- Rick Turns' weekly video list is available- Last week I mentioned that I had turned some cherry forms and they were soaking in a soap/water solution. After a couple of days, I pulled them out- Packed them in shavings Then put them in paper bags with more shavings They rest for a while- probably a week- and then the final turning/finishing. The other cherry is waiting for turning. One piece got rough turned into a bowl- Right now, it is soaking in the solution. Safe turning and stay well
