With the frustrations of bowls which can be a challenge, I've been turning pens. Quite frankly I'm enjoying it 20 times more. I can turn them out faster and put them together faster. I just finished this one up tonight. The barrels are made out of purple heart. I've got about 18 more blanks coming in tomorrow ordered some components. I still have to pick up some gold plated spacers to match. (Gift pens). But I think the pen turning has come with its own challenges of knowing when to stop cutting into the wood if it is too thin and brittle go down too far and it just breaks and snaps off the piece and then the time is wasted. I've been getting the time down to carving sanding and staining in less than an hour. But here is the first SEMI decent pen made. I ran out of blanks, what I basically used was handle scales for knives that I had laying around not being used. So I thought why not turn them into pens. Worked out pretty good.

Need some help/insight. 1st off I don't do pens, the wife does. BUT occasionally I get drafted into it and refusal is not an option. the set up: Craftsman bench top drill press a dedicated vice to hold the blank the proper sized brad point drill bit for the desired hole. the problem/question: when drilling the hole 8 times out of 10 the hole will be angled through the length of the blank. Both in wood & acrylic. Same result while drilling using the lathe. Is that a problem with my technique? the grain direction? the set up? the equipement? I try to clear the chips while drilling----she doesn't-- NORMALLY. So do you turners use a press or do you drill while on the lathe. How do you, if it can be done, cure/alleviate the bit from wandering? More questions to follow as I think of them. thks smitty

I have a golden plum in the pasture behind my house. It produces little yellow plums about the size of cherries. My cattle herd of 3 eats them faster than they can fall. I have to admit they are good. This tree has more twist, turns and wood growing in every direction. It has to have a lot of burls and figures. I have had my eye on this for many years. I think this would make good pen blanks and other small items. I hope this tree is on its last leg so it won’t be the one cutting me up. Preston

Drillnado

I saw this in another group's website. A new dust collector arrangement for drill presses called the "Drillnado". Sort of interesting: A penturner had modified it to fit to his tailstock for use when drilling pen blank on the lathe.. http://www.drillnado.com/
