I've now got some downtime and wanted to do something different for my next carving/gilding project. I want to carve this whale, in 3 dimensions, and mounted proud of a rectangular plaque. It should be 12-18" long, with all of the detailed carved into it.

It's been a very busy last two months with yard/garden/house repair work to be done for spring. Not much time with the computer or anything else! In addition to this my wife and I spent 3 weeks(Apr-May) traveling in Portugal, Spain, and Morocco. In Morocco, we did an afternoon 4-wheeled drive in the Sahara desert, meet up with a Berber tribe for a sunset camel ride through the dunes. The last photo verifies our camel ride! The shell is taken from a book on Eugene Landon's work and is a shell carved by him for a Chippendale Table. When completed, it will get gilded, as well as the plaque.

Our daughter and son-in-law have just purchased their first house in Springs, NY, south of Montauk. Their street address starts with just the #5 and then the street name. I thought that I could give them a house warming present, with a carving of just the #5, and it will be painted/gilded. Here's the start of the rough carving/layout for this project. The number carving is in basswood and the second disk of wood is pine, and the use of it will be apparent later on. Again, this is just a rough carving...... finishing will take place later.

Whenever my wife and I travel overseas, I always try to find and photograph any type of shell that I can find. These may be on the street, in churches, chateaus, or private estates. This shell was found in a church in Warsaw, Poland. While not representing anything in the real world, you can get the idea! Here are some of the steps that were taken to complete the carving, along with the plaque, that the shell was mounted to. We are headed to Sicily for 3 weeks and I am really looking forward to what I can find there.
