So with all the cold weather, I took some time to look at some of my lesser-used tools to get them into shape/sharpened so if I did want to use them they would be ready. I started with my many sets of Auger Bits and found a few pieces I didn't know what they were so I'm starting here

Found this in a box of assorted scrap, but curiosity got the better of me! It LOOKS like someone fashioned a slot screwdriver bit out of an old 5/16" drill bit, but the grind looks like it was done by a machine, very neat and even. What REALLY caught my attention was the 5/16" SQUARE hole dead center in the shaft, and about 5/16" deep! The whole thing is 3 1/16" long. Any ideas? There is a diamond on the shank with "WILT" in it, and a "/16", apparently the "5" above it was worn off.

And did NOT want to buy either a 3" Forstner Bit..nor a 3" hole saw..so.. Dug out 2 items...a 10" sweep brace.. Made by Peck, Stow, & Wilcox Co. (PEXTO) with a Samson chuck...about the largest chuck with 2 jaws... And out of a set of 4 Expansive Bits...this is the only one that can go out to 3" diameter... Had a high spot in the top of the bench..decided THAT would a spot for a test drive...so.. Had to crank that chuck almost as far opened as it could go, just to get the bit IN the chuck....this is one BIT bit.. Idea was to test out the snail ( sucks, too beat up, almost had to stand on it for it to bite..) enough that it would leave a "Ring" showing how big a hole it could make.. Just wanted it to score a line.. 3" exactly! As the hole this will drill is to fit the backside of this.. To where I can just push this in place, and NOT have it fall back out. Board for this hole? Currently IN the clamps, until tomorrow...has a few other things to happen first,,,before the hole gets drilled... Pays to have different ways of getting things done?

Brad Point Bits (Recommendations)
John Morris posted a topic in Machinery, Tools, Research, Reviews and Safety
Folks, I am in the market for a set of brad points. Namely in the smaller size sets, say from 1/4" to 1/2" so I guess that would be a set containing four bits? 1/4", 5/16", 3/8" and a 1/2". Or something in that manner. I am looking for very sharp clean holes, which all brad points will do for a period of time, but this is what separates poor from great, sharpness retention. If you use brad points, what do you use? Thanks folks!- 11 replies

As I was cleaning out my shop further today, I came across a brand new in the box plug cutter and a matching drill bit! It was like Christmas! I wonder what else is hiding in those crevices?
