I've looked at this thing forever....pulled the trigger the other day. Just now getting around to opening it up. I'll be sending some wood through it when it warms up a tad. It's about 5* here right now lol

When my old planer crapped out I was in the middle of projects (well, that's sort of a given at any time). I ordered the DeWalt 735x (came with infeed and outfeed wings and an extra set of blades). It seemed to be the most highly recommended machine in its class. I've been using it for over a month and have been very happy with it. Chip ejection is good, has two feed speeds for rough and final planing passes, and seems to do a good, smooth job. It has stops at common thicknesses, 1/4", 1/2", 3/4",... I did miss the Rockler sale that would come with the stand, but my wife got me it for Xmas present, though I was ready to do my own before then. Now I need to get that 350 lb dead monster out of my basement shop.

DeWalt Shelix head replacement
Artie posted a topic in Machinery, Tools, Research, Reviews and Safety
If this thread needs to be relocated by the powers that be, no problemo. I seem to remember Gene having a post on replacing the stock knives, on a DeWalt 735 planer, with the Byrd Shelix/Helix head. I have a 735, it’s never been plugged in. My meager WWing talents are improving to the point where I am considering trying some projects that involve using a planer. My shop is in the basement of our townhouse. The noise from the SS DC, Jet air filter, and router/table saw/whatever tool I’m using has driven the Missus to have to retreat to the upstairs on occasion. From what I’ve read the only negative to the Byrd upgrade is paying for it, a small adjustment to the depth of cut gauge. So to the long winded point of my screed, there appears to be two heads for sale, one is slightly smaller in diameter so it can be installed without having to remove the cutters, the other head is standard size, but involves the removal, and installation of the 40 cutters. Thoughts on this by anyone? (Preferable with experience). Amazon sells the smaller one for $425, anyone aware of better price anywhere? I’m thinking of swallowing hard (bank account wise) and learn how to use a planer with the Byrd head, from the get go. I tried to find Gene’s thread, looked under his profile (Gene you have a creepy stalker named Artie LOL) and went back 35 pages, and couldn’t find the thread, so here I am. I appreciate any info, thoughts, advice and opinions. Another question (I have an infinite supply), I have read where if you have a glued seam do not put it through a planer if the knives will come in contact with the glue True/False? Is this also valid with a helix/Shelix head? These are the thoughts that stop me from sleeping some nights (I wish I was being funny, but it’s true) Thank you to all. Artie PS any other thoughts on planers that anyone wants to share with me are also sought/welcomed.- 25 replies

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago after my 20 year old DeWalt 733 died that with the new DeWalt 735 I wanted to build a stand. Well, it is built and works just fine. I started out to build it entirely of Walnut but it turned out I didn't have quite enough on hand without getting into my good stock and I wasn't about to do that. So parts of it are Walnut. Here's the finished stand under my tablesaw extension - And here's the build video - Enjoy! David

From someone who owns a Dewalt 735 13 inch planer. I need a picture of the sprockets and chain assembly. This is very easy to do. Standing on the infeed side of the planer look on the left side and you will see a plastic guard that covers the sprockets. There are 3 hex head screws that remove with the supplied T handle wrench that's in the hole in the top of your planer. Remove that cover and take a picture and post it please. Also check and see how tight the chain is across the top of the sprockets. Thanks.
