For years I have struggled to find a good way to control the depth of a drilled hole using a hand drill. I have tried the painters tape to mark the depth but inevitably the drill bit will grab the wood and slide the tape up. Same with those little sleeves with the allen screw in the middle of it, the first time the bit grabs the wood the sleeve slides up. Yesterday I came up with a method that seems fool proof. If this fool can do it that is proof anyone can do it. Using what Harbor Freight calls Rare Earth magnets I put 3 magnets on the jaws of the drill chuck and used as many hex nuts as need to stop the bit at the desired depth and nuts with a center hole to fit as snug as possible to the size bit being used. Worked like a charm and as long as I make sure none the the nuts slip off the bit it isn't going to drill any deeper that desired.

Now I am excited! Hey, simple mind, simple pleasure. I ordered the Stanley No. 49 Auger Bit Depth Stop, should be here by Saturday. It'll be a very handy addition for my holes! Ya I know I could make some, but I really like these mechanical do-dads and gizmos.

A push button depth stop for my benchtop drill press.
4DThinker posted a topic in Machinery, Tools, Research, Reviews and Safety
I had one aggravation when using my benchtop Wen drill press. The depth stop was a knurled nut that had to be tediously spun around a fine threaded post to set a stop. There are push button stops you can buy for some drill presses. Pricey, and usually for the larger shafts on floor standing drill presses. I couldn't find one for the M12-1.25mm post on my Wen. I've made push button releases for a few past projects, so decided I could make my own depth stop for my Wen. Photos below. A more complete How-To is now live on my blog: https://4dfurniture.blogspot.com/2023/01/making-push-button-depth-stop-for-my.html I consider this a prototype. Next is to see if I can make one from aluminum. 4D- 159 replies

I have a small HF drill press that had a plastic collar to hold the depth stop. It was too flexible to be accurate, so I made a new one out of a piece of 1/4" thick aluminum. Herb
