I received an email and a picture from Dick Lewis yesterday. Dick is a Vietnam vet who is visually handicapped and he loves to turn. A month or so ago, we received a phone call, from an unknown number- which we usually don't answer- but thankfully we did this time. On the other end of the line was Patti Lewis, wife of Dick Lewis. She asked for me and explained about here husband and put him on the phone. He told me he wanted to turn a pepper grinder similar to the ones I make and wondered if I could help. You can't turn down a a fellow vet. I sent him all my images of how I made mine, including drawings and measurements. I told him that if he had any questions he was to call me and we could work them out. We did communicate over the next month when he got stuck and yesterday I received this image. I was completely blown away. Dick is blind and his wife is his eyes. He did a fantastic job. He created his own shape which looks very comfortable to use. As a side note, Dick's grandfather's brother was Sinclair Lewis, the famous author. Dick's wife, Patti, is a board member of the Sinclair Lewis Foundation Board. Thanks for allowing be to brag a little.

The Click Rule, Great for Woodworkers, and the Visually Impaired
John Morris posted a topic in Hand Tools
Our good friend and veteran Mark Wilson sent in an image of a wonderful shop aid that he received from the fine folks at Hines VA Center For the Blind gave him, it's a click rule. And it is a wonderful measuring device that is used widely in the shops of the visually impaired, the measuring uses are endless with this handy little device and the construction, fit and finish appear to be top quality. See image below If you look at it, it is a very robust and strong story stick. Seems like it would make a great addition to anyone shop whether you are visually impaired or not. Here is a quote from Mark Wilson below. "I thought maybe you and the guys might be interested in the click rule. The Hines Blind Center has given me them to help me measure. They are also handy to set router bit height and move the fence on the router table quickly in increments of 1/16" or more. Also good on table saw setting fence but always remember if you measure from outside of blade add a 1/8" for kerf. Here's a website were they sell it but you maybe able to find it else where." Mark Wilson Thank you Mark!!!! Great heads up man!- 4 replies

Install a large window blind above/behind you. When you are setting up to turn, pull the blind down behind you and it will confine the cuttings to one area for easy clean up. When done turning, let it self wind back overhead out of the way.
