 Certainly would be advantages to having a infinite speed settings.

Not that I know of Gramps, you just gotta be careful not too bottom out or use a scrap piece. I bet though, knowing the Shopsmith community, they have more than likely came up with a home made solution for a table insert for the drill press mode. There is a drum sander insert though, that could double as a drill press insert? Why not? Hmmm.
