Army Sgt. David Mayer (Homes For Our Troops Project)

One of our favorite pictures is of my family and myself ( @John Morris) standing around Sgt David Mayer. He was a joy to speak with, very warm, personable, and funny! He was very accessible and he even signed our hardhats! My son and I both got a signed hardhat from Sgt David Mayer, we will cherish those forever. This was the build day for Sgt. Mayer's home, I got to put on my bags, and put my framing hammer to work, and stand a few walls up, it was a lot of work, but fun. We met a ton of great folks, ate some great food, and because of Sgt. Mayer, we are living free.

Army SGT David Mayer was on his second deployment when he lost both of his legs when the convoy he was riding in was attacked in Al-Hillah, Iraq on March 14, 2008. En-route to a mission in Baghdad, SGT Mayer’s vehicle was struck by an Explosively Formed Penetrator, causing SGT Mayer to be thrown into the gunner’s cage, severely injured by shrapnel. David and two other soldiers suffered serious injuries leaving each of them a bilateral amputee. Airlifted to Landstuhl, Germany, SGT Mayer was later transported to Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

I remember that build. Literally right around the corner from my house about 2 minutes away. Lots of great people on that build and I had a lot of fun helping out putting up the framing. Tami and I were also there at the key ceremony. Lots of happy tears from David Mayer and from the many people there to support him.

That was our first one Allen, for my family, I have not been to one over a year, I really need to get my boots back on the ground with these events, I miss them. I had an opportunity to drive past that home a few months ago during my day job, and it looks they are doing a pretty straight job maintaining it the best they can.
