Yes sir that is the bark itself. I learned that, if you cut the tree in the spring the bark will stay on permanent for some reason or other. Also that arbortech minigrinder I bought just basically welds it down or sandblasts when turned to the side. It can be done by chainsaw as well at very fast throttle.  Also spragging the edge of the saw does just like the miniblade.

I am always amazed at what some are able to do with a knife or chisel and a piece of wood. I can't keep a clear image in my head long enough to carve this way.

That's why I got into woodturning

The dremel has become my friend.  They make the typhoon burrs and saburr tooth burrs that remove wood at super speed. Also a die grinder is awesome on a slightly bigger piece. Sometimes I use chisels. It just depends on the speed it needs done.
