A gloomy Friday here in North Alabama to begin the weekend looking out over my shop, but the forecast is for full sun tomorrow and high in the 60's.

ning-gloomyfriday-17313-44.jpg?width=750Looking forward to a full day in the shop with so many projects to pick from it may be hard to figuring out where to start. I have five cutting boards that I got glued last weekend and thinking I would work on them during the week. Too many computer related problems at work and it has been after 7:00 each night this week before I get home, so no shop time during the week.

But even with the gloomy weather here, it has been warm and the maple tree in the back yard is trying it's best to be ready for a long summer.

ning-mapletreebuds-17313-11.jpg?width=75Here is the flower starting to come out on the Silver Maple.

ning-mapleflower-17313-73.jpg?width=750So that brings me to share this with you today. I found this really cool app for your iPhone or iPad to help you identify trees if you are like me and when walking around the woods, they all look like standing up lumber.

Here is a screen shop from the app called LeafSnap and it is free. It will show the trees, leaves from the top and the bottom, the flower, the fruit, and even what the bark looks like.

So with that, tell what you have planned this weekend. Will you be working on a new shop project, craftshow projects, working in the shop, HDL (mine keeps growing), or getting some much needed R&R? We here at TPW are interested in the projects you are working on so please share them and show them off to us. We love to see those wonderful progress photos and you never know it might just inspire someone else to give it a try.

Well it is time for the breakfast of champions and get things going this morning. Pop Tarts and Diet Mt. Dew.

So I am looking forward to seeing your projects, get started posting.

On the mesa here, wind and snow forecasted for Sat. thru Mon. Possible 4" accumulation with wind at a steady 35 mph and gusts to 55. Glad we're not roofing!!!

The light is getting brighter. The upper case case work is finished. Now, I can start on making the trim pieces. Dentil molding incorporated in a crown molding at the top. Several different profiles on the bottom case. Had to order 4 different router bits. Not here yet.

Son from Okinawa just flew in to Tucson and is house hunting. (this case is for him) We'll be headed down that way next week. Hope to have the face frame and door glued up before we leave. Depends on when the router bits get here.

Lordy, I'll be glad to be done with this job!

A slap together seed starter station w/light. No fancy woodworking there!

Hope to get the final layers of finish on the platter/bowl. Have to plan the applications carefully in the small basement shop. Can't make any dust while the finish is wet.

Slowly getting back into the shop this week as my shoulder continues to heal (sort of). Did a bit of clean up and made up 4 small end grain cutting boards from the leftover pieces from the last batch that I made some time back. The cutting boards are completed, rough sanded and edge routed, so all that is left is to do the final sanding and oiling. I may get the sanding done today, but I don't know for sure as we got some wind and rain blowing through and I need to have the garage door open for air flow or I will be working in a cloud of dust. Not much happening over the weekend as I get to have breakfast with a friend Saturday morning and then do errands/shopping with my wife and Sunday is church and we may do something with friends. Monday my wife and I will head off to Yuma, AZ to see her parents for a few days. So taking things slow and easy as my shoulder heals. I went back to the doctor this week and since things are not healing as well as they should, he referred me to an Orthopedic to look deeper into things. But, as usual, it is a couple of weeks out before they can fit me in.

Hopefully my wife will be discharged from the hospital today. Once the wife gets settled back at home I have a few projects to finish up. I need to rebuild a set of dividers for the last jewelry box. I made dividers from 1/8" walnut and finished them with spray on poly but the finish left a whiteish hue. Probably didn't clean them properly. I got in a hurry to finish and didn't follow my habit of cleaning with DNA. Oh well live and learn.

I will be starting a Ferris wheel for my wife for Valentines day but I may have to make something a little simpler as the Ferris Wheel probably won't get done in time. The wife will have to go to the hospital all day twice a week for follow-up tests so my time in the shop will be limited over the next month.

Well I do have several things to do, but like you John I just don't know where to start. So I started just by going ahead and getting some stock rebuilt from the holidays so that I actually have something to sell. A few honey dippers a needle case or 3 and key chain. can't make but a pen or 2 with the little bit of Gorilla glue I have, If the darn things wouldn't come apart by using CA., I'd use that to glue the blanks in with. There are some cases I use it but not for the slimlines.

Might even make a small box or two but we'll see how much time I get to work on projects.

Have a great weekend all.

It's a cold rainy day here in Palm springs so I'm just dreaming of beig back home and in the shop. Of course when I get back home I'll have a few hours of snow removal to complete before I can even get to the door.

Vacationing with some friends. it's been such a good time that we are already planing a return trip for next year.

Tomorrow I am taking a drive out to Torrance to All Star Cabinets. It's a mom and pop cabinet shop who contacted me and wants to give us all their left overs, change orders, and rejects. What does this mean? It's going to be a truck full of brand new cabinet doors, full sheets of veneers, and a custom vanity with granite top and bowl that they installed for a wealthy customer, and she decided they did not want it! So they are going to load that up in our truck as well. When I get back and sort it all out, I'll raffle it all off or sell it to our members here at The Patriot Woodworker and we'll use the proceeds to help keep us live and to further our projects for our troops. So stay tuned!

John H.,

Glad that you were able to enjoy your time here in So. Calif. and get out of the white stuff back in WI.

If you make it out here to the "Left Coast"next year by all means we should try to get together along with other TPW folks in the area. Have a safe trip home.

sorry Allen, I didn't realize you were talking to John Morris. There's just to many people named John on here so I think all of the others should change thier names :)

No worries.

I can't tell all the Johns without a score card. Maybe we need to get Nick-Names for all the Johns here on TPW.

For John Moody I think we should call him "Pop-Tart" :-)
