My Masterpiece, Spiral dream

Featured Replies

I've posted this on a few forums so you may have already seen it. I still wanted to share it with my friends here. I call it "Spiral Dream" because what I had planned to make for the contest put on by Baileigh tools, is by no means what came off my lathe. I don't even remember exactly where or when I changed my mind, all I know it, this is what came off the lathe. It's made of Bubinga, stands 16.5" tall & 5" in diameter. At its thinnest point it's 1/16" thin. I used Glaser Mini QR tools to do most of the work on a Powermatic 4224. Anyway, please enjoy.

Baileigh tools should just send you the first place prize, now!

I actually did win the contest. They're great folks at Baileigh.

Bill, that is a masterpiece, what an incredible piece of art, it is amazing how you work the wood like this.

To me, it is like magic how you get from a block of wood, to this. The wood is beautiful, the finish is amazing, and your photography is nice too I might add!

So, the million dollar question, how the heck do you do this!

Thanks very much my friends. I'll try to dig up a few pics of the process of building it. It was such fun to do.

Bill, I can only hope to one day be on the same level as this. Such a beautiful turning. Thank you for sharing.

The big test will be if I can do it again, this was my first attempt at the vessel & lid & my second finial. I'm going to try to begin another one next week.

Please keep us posted. As I am just trying to learn how to turn I couldn't even think I could do something like that. I think that piece is a work of art and couldn't ever be done again. It needs to be in a museum its that good. Lots of luck
