Not Lew, one of the most diverse woodworkers I know, from power to hand work he's got it all going on.

I know we are just razing folks Rick. 🙂

John...I may have missed it but what is the primary bevel angle on your "Nomikatsu Chisels"?.... there's no micro bevel right? .. or is there? If so what is it as well?

Did a bit of research into these chisels, and I found out that normally they ship to the purchaser with loose hoops, as many makers of Japanese chisels do. What got me to thinking about this, was looking at my chisels, they looked like the handle tops were never used or mushroomed, they look crisp and clean. So I was wondering that perhaps they were never set to begin with and it appears they were never set!

As stated earlier, the chisels are very sharp, since these appear to be new chisels, they are probably sharpened by the maker of the chisels, and ol Jim never used them, obviously since he never set the hoops.

I popped on over to Gemini AI and asked and I think AI got it right:

Yes, Nomikatsu and other traditional Japanese striking chisels (nomi) are intentionally shipped with loose or barely fitted hoops. This is a standard feature of high-quality Japanese tools, as the final "setting" of the hoop (katsura) is considered a necessary part of the owner's initial setup and personalization process.

Rick, one bevel only on all the chisels. I'll have to head out to the bench to set my angle gauge up on a few of the chisels and let ya know.

Thanks John. I didn't think there would be but one bevel. I've studied details of Kanna-ba and have never seen but one. Don't you have one of these?

Yo Rick.

Largest chisel is shy of 30 degrees, I'd say closer to 29.

Then the rest of the chisels hover around 24 to 26 I'd say till you get down to the last two small mortisers. At around 40 degrees.

Thanks John. That all makes sense.
