April 20Apr 20 Popular Post Well all the suitcases (hers) are unpacked, laundry done, dog washed and the yard mowed. Gonna try to cut back some mulberry branches that have started shading the garden and dispose of them at the borough landfill. Lots of little errands to complete after last weeks "vacation".
April 20Apr 20 Popular Post Mitersaw station "dust hood" progress today. I ended up adding thickness to the side panels by doubling the 1/2 plywood on the top. Thankfully I wanted to decrease the height so I just glued on my cutoff. I did set the added piece forward so another plywood cross piece would fit into the back. Also added a cross piece at the bottom. Struggled with getting everything aligned to screw together (I think I need to go to a cabinet building class!), but persistence and a willingness to accept "that's really close" worked out in the end. I still plan to add some walnut trim like I did with other parts of the miter station. Current status:
April 21Apr 21 Popular Post I'm working on making a Tachi Ganna. It's a Japanese Scraping Plane. They look like this but mine is a little different. At the moment I'm making the plane blade. It's turning out well but tough work. I'm in the flattening process. Edited April 21Apr 21 by MrRick

April 21Apr 21 Popular Post What PT this morning then had to go to the cardiologist. He says I’m gonna make it this afternoon. Finished putting the power cable in for the electric fence and finished filling out the garden. But still have to raise the rows for the garden tomorrow and maybe then some planting. got a bit of mowing to do my son‘s gonna help on that tomorrow and we’ll see what happens.
April 21Apr 21 Popular Post Worked on the walnut trim today for the mitersaw dust box. Clamped in stages. Last part in place at end of the day. Was short on clamps that would fit so used the old "clamp to another clamp" which seemed to work out fine. Cleanup and sanding will be the next step before getting some finish applied.Current status:
April 21Apr 21 Popular Post Holy cow! Ya gotta enough clamps? 😉 Lol. It's coming together nicely. Lookin good. Edited April 21Apr 21 by MrRick
April 22Apr 22 Popular Post Hey Barb... you ever tried headless micro pinning? It mitigates clamping. Edited April 22Apr 22 by MrRick

April 22Apr 22 Popular Post 10 hours ago, MrRick said:headless micro pinning? One of the boards I used had some bow after the strip was cut for the edge banding. Would the pin nail be able to ensure that was snug/flat? Was fine with the clamps. Also, no worries about a "miss" on the thin 1/2 inch edge (yes, have had those situations where the pin went through the side). So, like the pin nail option, but clamps still are likely my first go to.
April 22Apr 22 Barb... the pin will hold the trim piece flat to the bowed board. I assume you will glue and micro pin it. Nothing like trying one to find out. You can always remove before glue sets. Can you mock up your situation first then you'll have a confidence factor for what to expect. As for micro pin misfire just make sure your gun tip is tight to surface and perpendicular before the trigger squeeze.
April 22Apr 22 @MrRick yes, a trial run is always a good idea - but I didn't have extra stock in this situation. Clamping wasn't too bad and seems to have given a good outcome.Keeping the nailer tight and straight is the goal. Reality is that a small shift can cause issues. I am considering nailer options that won't require my dragging out the compressor. Being cordless would help with not being in awkward positions when lining things up.
April 22Apr 22 Popular Post Late to the party. Still way, way behind on my reading here.I've spent the best part of the last two afternoons mowing. Today's a down day trying to recover plus oldest grandson has a home baseball game at 5:30P. No woodworking on the agenda this week unless picking up sticks counts? Tomorrow mow-a-thon 2.0 begins after a trip to the refueling center and some quick mower service.I do have exciting news to report; donut inventory has been replenished. Since I'm a latchkey grandpa and stay-at-home dad without kids or daily supervision, I've rewarded myself with a daily, morning donut for some Reward Ceremony yet TBD. Have a blessed and safe week and remember "no donut should be left behind."
