April 6Apr 6 Popular Post This one didn't turn out as I hoped (inspired by Self-Taught Woodworking post on FB). The original was open in the middle but I wasn't sure the butt joints would be sufficient so cut a backer from walnut. I hoped the different colors of the walnut I used would provide contrast but not really enough with the other walnut; other wood is maple. Also some pieces shifted in when clamping for glueup. May try this design again in the future armed with what I learned in this build. Given all the little issues (mistakes), I think I'll find a place to hang this in my shop rather than gift to someone.
April 6Apr 6 Author I like the concept Barb. Looks like a fair amount of work. Consider it your prototype for working out all the bugs and issues. I have absolutely no doubt your next one will be great!!
April 6Apr 6 My kind of plans. I can read and relate to plans like these; they make perfect sense to me.

April 10Apr 10 Don't know about the plans but I think it would look good with a bloodwood insert in that middle open area.

Having a contrast would be better than my two tones of walnut (hoped the shading difference would be greater). I've never seen bloodwood so I Googled - very pretty and would be beautiful.
April 10Apr 10 One of the things I’ve noticed in this hobby, seems to be the people who can see the project in their head, seem to make the best stuff! Cross looks very good to me.
