February 6Feb 6 (background) I've been toying with the idea of taping some wood blanks to use as a waste block for mounting turning bowls.so I been searching for 1x8 tapswell "holy crap Batman" are they now made of gold? The prices that are being asked makes me wonder if it is just easier to buy a stock of face plates and call it a dayBeall used to have them, but supposedly Beall is now out of business & Lee Valley bot some/all of their stock. The ones that are available on line are commanding a ridiculous price.anyone either know of a reasonably price one or is willing to sell a seldom used one?thkssmitty
February 6Feb 6 Smitty, I am pretty ignorant, what do these look like, I have some turning things in storage I inherited, maybe I may have what you need.
February 6Feb 6 Also, moved your topic from General Woodworking to Turners Forum, might get some more eyes on this that way 🙂
February 6Feb 6 I've only used them a couple of time (waste blocks), but that was with face plates. Actually, the thought of screwing them onto the lathe spindle (I guess that's what you want to do) never occurred to me. Edited February 6Feb 6 by Fred W. Hargis Jr

February 6Feb 6 Available on Amazon and other places. I went to a machine shop and asked if they had an old, dull one. It works great for wood. Just remember the threading works best when threading into side grain- not end grain. If you must do end grain, saturate the pilot hole with CA glue to harden the fibers. This one is $15.https://www.amazon.com/Drill-America-Qualtech-Threading-Bottoming/dp/B00FXK5FMK/

February 7Feb 7 What Lew has suggested is a metal tap . Metal taps work in wood well in most cases. I have a Beall and it works great, threaded area is no more than an inch. You can make your own from a bolt of the appropriate size. Use a hacksaw to cut a groove and then file it to sharpness desired. The problem may be finding the bolt.

The problem may be finding the bolt.I have done that, too, for some of the smaller requirements- 3/4 x 10 add-ons for my live center threads. Instead of the hacksaw, I use a Dremel with a cutting wheel.
