October 24, 2025Oct 24 And a small cut-off of 1/4" Plywood... 1/2" thick Maple scraps...2 ends, 2 sides...Needed to set out a few tools.. Lay out some dovetail pins, and saw the lines... Chop out the waste, use these Pins to lay out the Tails, and saw the waste away from the tails...then a dry fit was attempted... 1 corner done, 3 to go.... Maple scraps started out like this... After resawing off the nasty side of 2 boards (still have one to do,,) Ripped down til they match for width... Planed off the saw marks... To come up with 4 sides of a box... Plywood was a left over from the last 2 Projects...might have a second one, lurking around in the shop...1 for a box bottom, one for a lid's panel? Stay tuned..
October 24, 2025Oct 24 Author Popular Post One hour IN the shop, today... Lay out work.. Doing pins first, as usual...after the saw gets done, decided to add the chopping block to the bench top.. Set up right over the bench leg...no bounce allowed... Been used a few times, eh? Tools to chop with? Mallet and Chisel...half chopped, flip over.. Needed that narrow chisel..."large chisel" is 1/4" wide, BTW... Use these pins the lay out the tails to fit...dry fit? Repeat for corner #3.. Which leaves Corner #4 to do next time.. This "thing".. Has all the parts to make a lid's collar for this box...but.. It has a few Issues to fix... IF the wind calms down later... I have work for the Fire Pit to do....about 3-4 loads of this stuff... Stay tuned 🤠

October 29, 2025Oct 29 Author Popular Post Corner #4 is done One of top left... Then a rebate was formed up Because I did not want to see the plywood edges.. From simply gluing the plywood to the bottom of the box....so.. Opened corners? We have ways... Fill each spot with a tab...and then glue the bottom panel into place....after the box has been glued up.. And pulled into square..using a diagonal clamp and a small square to check... Maybe tomorrow, after a few errands get run...I can glue in the bottom panel...and start on cobbling up a lid? Stay tuned..
October 29, 2025Oct 29 Author Recycled the clamps a bit... Made up a few pine cauls..and glued the 1/4" plywood bottom panel in place.. Center clamps didn't require a caul... As for that square... Still sitting there...
October 30, 2025Oct 30 Author Popular Post Box is out of the clamps, and cleaned up.. so...remember this chunk of junk wood? By the time the tablesaw was done with it.. Big mess on the floor, and I needed a couple helpers, to boot... Things to save me fingers. I got 3 pieces.. To make the 4 sides of a collar for the Lid, and... 5 pieces to make a panel for the Lid...The Plan? Glue the panel up, trim it to size, and wrap it up into a collar...then install a few hinges, and a latch.. Bench Vise acts as a 3rd hand, and, a caul to flatten things out...2 cauls (pine) at the other end, to pull that end into flat..waiting on glue to dry, now... Question is about HOW to join the corners for the collar...maybe a single through dovetail? We'll see...
November 2, 2025Nov 2 Author Popular Post Panel is out of the clamps...trimmed up, planed flat.. Was trimmed on the same mitre box as.. The parts for the collar Single tail into a pair of half pins for the corners of the collar..then some glue and clamps... Flip over to make sure the panel is flush Let it sit overnight... Stay tuned..
November 3, 2025Nov 3 Author Popular Post Ok..lid came out of the clamps, this morning ( Monday? Compost happens) Top of lid was planed flat and smooth..needed to level the underside.. Check it with the top of the box.. Couple of high spots on the top of the box...so... Finally got both to about match up... Dig out a couple hinges.. Trying to decide IF this will be the back of the box, or... Make this the Front of the Box... Was trying to line up the dovetails between the lid and the box...came close? Stay tuned...
November 6, 2025Nov 6 Author And a coat of Witch's Brew Stain...front... back... end.. Was trying to line up the Tails to match.. and, the inside.. May get a layer of Green Felt inside? waiting on hardware to fully dress up the outside, before a coat of varnish... Stay tuned..
