Hi,

I have a Disston #7 crosscut and an E.C. Atkins rip cut handsaw. they are the full length 24"-26" respectively.

I do all of my woodworking out back, and have a tool chest I cart back and forth that has everything I need in it, including joinery saws and a cut down Warrented Superior rip saw.

But I find myself wanting a crosscut panel saw as well.

The two aforementioned saws hang in my middle room in my home. If I want them I have to run back into the house to get them, bring them out back, and find a place to set them down, or run them back in the house when I'm done with them. It's getting tiresome, honestly.

I know on a lot of discussion pages many people feel that it's almost criminal to cut one of these old vintage saws down, much less cutting two of them down. But they would be much more useful if I had them in the chest with everything else.

Make a bigger chest, you say? I have no more room in the middle room of a trailer for a larger chest. Not possible.

What is the general opinion here? I don't want to destroy a piece of history, but if they hang in my home and are never used what is the sense in having them?

Thanks in advance for your opinions on this.

Tough questions Mike. Is there a way to slightly modify your tool chest to allow the saws to be transported externally vs internal; some type of enclosed "holster" on the top or back, positioned at an angle, with perhaps only the handles exposed. Not ideal, but a potential solution.

Otherwise, they are your saws to use or modify to meet your needs, when, where and how you need them.

BTW, Good to see you posting again. Hope all is well.

I'm with gramps, your saws, your comfort level. these saws are a dime a dozen, they are literally hundreds of thousands if not million or more of these saws in existence, ya they are neat "old" saws, but you'll not find any hand saw purist nazis on the subject here in these forums I'd wager. if I needed to cut mine down I would.

By the way, if you do a good enough job on cutting them down, years from now after you and yours are long gone and some folks come across your shortened saws, I guarantee those saws will be featured on some What's It article in the future, I could see it now, when did Stanley make a short panel saw in this style? First best answer gets the prize! For that reason alone I'd cut em down, just to throw folks off in the future 😆

Thanks gentlemen.

Gramps, that's sn idea. I cart the tool chest back and forth on a little roll cart. I could rig something on that but it would still be awkward. I have some thinking to do on the subject . But they would be a lot more useful to me if I shortened them.

By the wy, I've not gone anywhere and don't plan on it.

I am essentially a Youtuber. I have been furiously shooting footage to put back for winter, which will stop me from working wood at some point.

So between the guitar build, and a new project for winter, plus the fact that I have two other Youtube channels I'm trying to produce videos for I haven't had the time to take screen shots from the videos I've posted on my wood working channel to post here.

No matter what i do, there will come a point when content will slow down on my channels for winter. Just trying to mitigate that damage as much as I can ahead of time.

But I am on here frequently, just not posting much right now. Hopefully that will soon change.

Keith @kmealy, what is that?

Have you seen this from Cosman. I think it's pretty cool.
