"Great topic for our What's It department Dick!"

Recently came across a No. 5-1/2 Stanley bench plane which has all the characteristics of a Type 14 with the exception of the frog which shows both 5-1/2 and 467 castings on the bottom. The frog is non-ogee type and has machined tabs at the base which align perfectly with the machined bearing surfaces on the plane's base. From what I can determine based upon my research, the "467" casting mark is indicative of Type 18 planes.

I've posted some pics showing details of Frog/Body interface and casting marks.
Has anyone ever come across the anomaly before?

Hey Dick, interchangeable parts perhaps? Could be cobbled together from two No. 5 1/2's

John Moody is our resident Stanley guru.  Hopefully, he will wander by and see your post.

That would have been my initial thought however the bodies of Type 14 and Type 18 are not the same where the frog sets on the body.  Type 14 body and frog have matching machined tabs that keep frog aligned.  Type 18 doesn't have these machined tabs - so type 14/18 are not at all interchangeable.

Welcome Dick.

We'll see if @steven newmanhas any insight on this topic.

Afraid I'm not much help...as my Stanley No. 5-1/2 is a Type 11...with the 2-3/8" iron...

@John Moody; any assistance you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback

Dick, I have a #5 ogee frog that is paired with what looks like a type 15 body. My frog has 466 forged in the underside.
once I register for this forum and am approved I’ll post pics.

Thanks for all the feedback so far.  Unfortunately the enigma has yet to be solved

made by Sargent for the frog..

Thanks Steve.  Seems weird that Sargent would make a frog for a Stanley plane.  Would you be so kind as to share your source of info on this?
