    A little secret   - - - The "live edge" is actually carved from a piece of 5/4 oak and then painted.  The model was carved into that.

    I suspect the most appealing version to my old eyes would have the surrounding area cut flat to the edge of whatever board it is on.  So that the carving would stand proud of the surrounding area with no perimeter frame to distract from it.

    Kinda agree 4d - just gotta find a piece of material thick nuff to try it.  Was just experimenting with what I had handy.
